Hi

I have been successful in being given conditional offer of a job as an On-board Customer Host (working in the buffet car etc.) One of the conditions is to pass a medical, however I am a little worried as to whether my having no sight in 1 eye (condition since birth) will mean I am not going to pass the medical. It is a non safety critical role, however I can't find put anywhere whether my condition would prevent me from being given the role.

Can anyone offer me any advice/reassurance/information?

I don't know the criteria so am no expert but if you are in a non-safety role and you have good vision in your other eye (and no other relevant medical problems), then I can't see there being a problem. As long as the TOC are aware and are able to make the necessary provisons for you (if they are necessary).

Claire, I believe that you'll be subject to normal Occupational Health medical checks rather than RSSB standards so the Equality Act applies, with reasonable adjustments if required.

Congratulations on the job offer, glad to hear it. Hope the medical goes well, it should be fine.

On the whole, I suspect most medicals are merely to check your [1] 'condition' before starting, so that you can't suddenly claim to have contracted some disease and sue the employer for it when it was pre-existing.

Thanks all. I don't need any work place adjustments, and sight in other eye is normal. so can't see there should be any logical reason but wasn't sure if some weird requirement/rule to have sight in both eyes may apply for Onboard roles.....figures crossed all will be fine

Believe it or not you can actually hold PTS with vision in only one eye, though monocular vision is not permitted for drivers.

Hi I'm a conductor and due for a medical this week really want to keep my job but I have lost sight in one eye due to a tumour can you enlighten me on how u can keep pets with monocular vision
