MediaCityUK points fail again, its there something wrong with them?

They weren't, was already planned for Lowry in a slightly different platform location, they just reoriented it from facing the Lowry to facing Media City after Peel offered to contribute nearly £10m towards its cost by providing the funding for the purchase of the 4 trams required to operate a service as far as Cornbrook. Salford Council paid for the infrastructure (tram stop and track) another £10m they were already going to contribute towards a Lowry stop.

It was planned but no sign of it happening, it was certainly developed as part of the deal for the BBC, it may have been a carrot to boost the bid.

Planning a project is one matter, but sourcing the required finance to achieve that aspiration is a totally different kettle of fish.

One should view Media City UK as being a terminal stop only and not really any part whatsoever of the continuation of the line onward to Eccles. Media City UK is a 2-platform terminal stop that is ideally situated to serve all the broadcasting groups and in addition is well situated for the shopping mall and the Lowry Centre. There should be the direct services to Eccles, but none of them need to serve Media City UK.

I am thinking of the plans for Shaw and Crompton and its terminal platform which, correct me if my information is out of date, is planned to have services starting and finishing there which will supplement the onward service provision to Rochdale Town Centre, in the same was as occurred with the former heavy rail route on the Oldham loop line.

Because it is an operational nightmare.

It certainly shouldn't be in use outside of 'peak hours'

It begs the question why Metrolink find a simple spur such a difficult operational issue when overseas tram network with multiple and complex junctions function perfectly well, and UK networks did likewise in the 1950s.

How do the on-road points at the Picadilly Garden triangle work?

I don't think the walking difference is that great between the two stops. It might be 300 to 400 metres walk between them, but Broadway to destination isn't much more than Media city stop to destination. I doubt that the other 'con' is an issue either.
