Mechanical ash plants, (motive power depots)

Im not sure if this is the right section, but after doing a few internet searching information on these appears very limited. Fortunately we do have one surviving at Carnforth, the last one. I must admit when I was shed bashing in the 50s and 60s I didnt pay much attention to those things, so can I ask how did they actually work and what was the purpose and what would be the track layout, ie I presume you would need two tracks going to them, one for the waggons to go underneath/through and another track near the lift mechanism, similar to a coaling tower with a waggon lift on?

Despite what historic England states I thought Lostock Hall was actually the last operational steam depot

Despite what historic England states I thought Lostock Hall was actually the last operational steam depot

I must admit I regularly visited Carnforth, Loststock Hall and Rose Grove to the last days and presumed they all officially closed on the same day?? Lostock Hall closed on the 3rd August for steam, but carried on as a diesel depot until 1973 and officially closed in 1986, Rose Grove closed on 4th August 1968

That is what it says on a plaque somewhere and also what I believed to be true too.
