Just thought that, with the annual griping about rail fares going up and the normal claims that it's so much better in Europe, I'd post something I just came across. I'm going to Dresden at the end of the month, and it's a lot cheaper to fly to Berlin. So, I went on Omio to book a train or bus and this was the headline result:



Train - $55, 5h 25m travel time
Bus - $2, 2h15m travel time

The train is 25 times more expensive and takes over twice as long! So, take heart rail passengers, the grass isn't all greener on the other side of The Sleeve.

No idea what you’ve managed to get it to show. Berlin-Dresden is around two hours on an IC and most trains huge advance faires of €17.90 next week. Most of the network in the East is still being rebuilt to modern standards - it’s not a fast route but some quality CD stock and restaurant car passes the time nicely.

Didn't do anything special, just a normal search.

Oh, it's an anomaly no doubt (probably engineering works) but it goes to show that the examples that are trotted out of how bad the UK rail network is have their analogues in other countries.
