Day off work, so off course the weather is damp and dreary!
Had a run out this afternoon, primarily for a short ride on the TFW Class 67, to graph the Nuneaton-Crewe-Wembley test/mileage run and to see if any LNWR Class 730’s could be seen.

WEDNESDAY 05TH APRIL 2023
As I parked the car at Preston the following was ‘yinging away merrily to itself.
Preston
66601 6H51 11:05 Hardendale Quarry to Tunstead Sidings.

390130 was a leap to Warrington on 1M11(not *the*1M11)which was followed by 390157 on 9M54 to Crewe.

WARRINGTON ARPLEY YARD
66140 and 66197(140 was stabled).
Passing the South Yard(Walton Old Jn sidings) I noted a couple of Merseyrail Class 777
I presume these are 777144 and 777146?

Arrived at Crewe hoping to graph what I presumed would be a Class 197 on 3Q06 14:06 Crewe to Holyhead but it had departed early at 13:49 with the law of sod applied.
Nothing much aside from a distant Class 08 shunting at Crewe Diesel depot(or LSL depot as is now), I’d confirm that later.
150252 was operating 1V44 to Tenby, looking at the waiting throngs on the platform I thought this looked ambitious, however all punters got on(turned out 1V44 had only come from Wilmslow).
390137 was my next taxi as it sped me to Wilmslow on 1H67.
En route we passed…

SANDBACH
66764 4H61 10:35 Small Heath Lafage to Hindlow.

On arrival at Wimlslow I had hoped to graph 0K30 13:24 Crewe Basford Hall to Crewe Basford Hall Via Wilmslow but again the law of sod applied as it had left 35 minutes early.
Schoolboy error on not checking that 4H61 was actually 4H61 and it was due through Wilmslow(it was running late in my defence) so just about managed a graph of it powering through.
67014 arrived on 1V46(14:30 Manchester Piccadilly to Cardiff Central)and was taken back to Crewe, a packed service(See earlier comments about the Tenby train at Crewe).
On arrival at Crewe 153323 & 153921 was noted on what I presume was 1W18 09:01 ex Milford Haven(which had seemingly only come from from Cardiff with them), certainly some interesting match ups on the Cardiff-Manchesters today, a Quick leap at Crewe for 1U36 made up of 350233 & 350402.

CREWE LSL(Diesel Depot)
08631 BR Blue(looks very nice), was the machine seen earlier and it was still shunting coaches around.
86101 / 90001 / 90002

Crewe Arriva Depot(Carriage sidings in old money)
730101 & 730103: LNWR along with 67029.

CREWE BASFORD HALL
Didn’t realise how many Class 86’s was stored at the south end(I think it was 15?), 86613 / 86614 / 86628 was confirmed(I was going to get the rest on the way back but a poorly positioned ballast train scuppered that plan).

STAFFORD
Seen between 15:34 and 17:42 was….
66549 4M88 09:32 Felixstowe North-Ditton(oconner).
66571 0K50 15:13 Toton North Yard-Crewe Basford Hall S.S.N.
66596 4L92 13:04 Ditton(Oconner)-Felixstowe North.
66610 6H50 13:21 Willesden(Up and down relief)-Tunstead Sidings.
66747 4L18 14:20 Trafford Park Euro Terminal-Felixstowe North
70006 4M58 09:27 Southampton M.C.T.-Garston F.L.T.
70016 4029 15:20 Trafford Park F.L.T-Southampton M.C.T.
DR73118 6U52 12:45 Crewe P.A.D-Crewe P.A.D. via Rugby.
And what I went for….
720603 C2C 5Q93 15:07 Nuneaton-Crewe / 5Q94 16:48 Crewe-Ilford E.M.U.D(but think it only went to Wembley Yard?).

An enjoyable few hours, particular mention to 70006 on 4M58, Some serious clag and noise out of that, honours in passing to a few of the Class 66’s which are clearly showing signs of dragging long liners around the country!
350369 & 350403 took me back to Crewe on 1U41.
Only thing of note in the Crewe 'area' was the line of Class 197’s in the carriage shed/Arriva depot(both Class 730’s still present)
It was then left to 390129 to take me to Preston on 9S85.

WARRINGTON ARPLEY DEPOT
66059 (and 66140 still here).

LEYLAND PLANT(BRITISH LEYLAND SIDINGS)
66784 6M29 21:10 Leyland British Leyland-Rylstone Tilcon.

Cheers.

Most enjoyable reading this report. Gives me a detailed snapshot of what is around in that area, one I haven’t visited in quite a while. I also had a brief ride on 67014 yesterday albeit on the Welsh end.

It sure looks like you had a fun little day out there, even though you missed a couple of bits due to their running early. Agreed on the 86s you saw, it looks such a sad sight to see them all there and not roaring away on an intermodal train.

Did you catch a glimpse of the ScotRail (BR) liveried set on those sidings next to platform 12 at Crewe? I couldn't see too much of it the other day, but what I could see of the DBSO looked amazing.
