McGill's Buses - Renfrewshire & Inverclyde

The cuts started back to when McGills merged their services with Arriva’s network. Since then they’ve been trimming frequencies and dropping services fairly regularly, but they do it service by service instead of via grand network reviews, so the cuts go under the radar. Having said that, Renfrewshire had years of competition with most corridors wildly over-bused, so if McGills were going to get back their investment they were going to have to reduce services. Just feels like things have gone too far. Still think both First and McGills will have to reduce their Paisley-Glasgow services. There were too many buses pre-Covid; once the government support runs out, reality will bite.

I think the 38 will eventually need to be cut. 12 buses an hour between Paisley and Glasgow is overkill for one company let alone when there's competition too from the 9 and trains. Even before Covid I rarely seen a 38 that was that busy between Glasgow city centre and Cardonald.

I agree, even in the morning peak when waiting for a bus up to college, the 38s went past me were near enough dead. And then also theres the 10 from Silverburn on the latter half of Paisley Road West.

Yeah it's an overkill corridor of the bus network here. 12 38s when at full service, 6 9s, 6 9As, 4 10s. It's just not sustainable and even with First still not running a full timetable on the 9/9A/10 there's still too many buses

Aren't all the 38s a remainder from Arriva days?

I vaguely having a recollection of there being a 36/37(?)/38 and 39 bus.

There was also additional 38s provided by Dickson's.

I think so. I didn't really use Arriva much but I do remember a 36 at one point at the very least

Any operators looking to cut, should look to McGill's as a text book example. Take Erskine North Barr, every 9 Minutes with Arriva Service 23. Gradually cut to every 30 Minutes with McGill's. Look at Spateston, 9 Buses per Hour (Services 17/20/38) now Service 38 every 20 Minutes. Cochrane Castle had a 38 Every 10 Minutes, now Service 20 Every 30 Minutes. Cochrane Castle also took a longer Route to Paisley along with their frequency cut. There are so many examples of McGill's obliterating a Bus Service.

With frequencies like that, I can fully understand why Arriva were keen to off-load their Scottish operation! o_O
None of those areas could come anywhere near justifying those service levels.
Most of the core routes across Renfrewshire seem to be at around the correct level, or at least they were pre-Covid.
With vehicle capacity at levels around the 18-20 mark, there are a number of services with journeys that regularly come close (or exceed) those capacities. That is something that all the main operator’s (incl.McGill’s) are experiencing, hence why there are a variety of measures being adopted to keep people moving.

Trying to do this from memory! Arriva used the old Clydeside numbers - same route from Glasgow to Paisley with variations round Johnstone.
36 Glasgow - Kilbarchan via Johnstone Centre
38 Glasgow - Spateston via Johnstone Castle and Cochrane Castle
39 Glasgow - Spateston via Johnstone Centre.
There was a 30 which was Spateston - Cochrane Castle via Johnstone Centre too which is long gone, Key Coaches run part of it now. I don't remember a 37.

Dickson's had a 38, mainly minibuses between Glasgow and Paisley. McGill's bought this and expanded the service. Once McGill's bought Arriva they renumbered all of the Paisley Road West routes to 38/38A.

The 38s beyond Paisley all go to Kilbarchan or Spateston via Johnstone Centre, using the old 36 and 39 routes. The 38A is a peak time variation which skips Johnstone Centre and uses the 'old 38 route' via Johnstone Castle.

Johnstone Castle is served by the 20 bus during the day but at nights and Sundays when the 20 is finished the 38 to Spateston will double back from Quarrleton Road to serve. Not overly simple.

With frequencies like that, I can fully understand why Arriva were keen to off-load their Scottish operation! o_O

It was worse in the 1990s- most routes had some form of competition and some of it was silly stuff. A lot of the independent operators are gone and McGill's are left. Running old minibuses with 5 folk on it might have worked in the 90s, but not today.

Much of it is based on economic reasons. Paisley have suffered like many Scottish towns, as industry closes and shopping slumps and moves out of town. This reduces demand and has caused removal of many bus routes- Paisley doesn't have links with places a few miles away like Houston any more, Johnstone and Linwood aren't linked well either with supported services focused on maintaining coverage not usefulness.

McGill's need to be weary of cutting too much- it can harm marginal links and if services are not frequent enough they will lose passengers. I think the 17 is an example of this- removed links west-east of Paisley and frequency drop means it's not turn up and go. They have to walk a tightrope on that.

Equally, multiple operators with different tickets on corridors leads to over provision and you think a degree of regulation could assist in fixing things for the benefit of operators and passengers. First running the 9 to Paisley just isn't needed, when McGill's could cover, as Covid showed. The problem is single operator tickets.

The 17 was probably harmed by First bringing in the 77 with a 10 min frequency to be fair. I used the bus to Thornwood from Paisley a bit when I went to college in Paisley in 2012/13 just because it cut out a fair chunk of my journey plus it saved me getting a tour of Erskine just to get into Clydebank and then a train that didn't time well. It was a busy bus back then but it's had a big decline. Same with the buses through Erskine to be fair. Was shocked when I got the 757 about a year ago and I was the only person on it for most of it

Ah hah, I remember it now.

Wasn't the route up through the West End also supplemented by First running the 9 from Glasgow - Linwood, so it seemed a little bit too much overkill. I do remember that the Dickson's 38 was substantially faster than the Arriva one due to not many people using it as the 36/38/39 was more frequent.

A new acquisition is a former Shearings Mercedes Tourismo coach BU18YTE (150). It is expected to replace Scania 0713 on Morton FC and private hire duties, as it isn’t currently PSVAR (Public Service Vehicle Accessibility Regulations) compliant.

Mr Roberts did put on the McGills Enthusiast Facebook Group though that the intention is to get a PSVAR pack for the coach.

Do McGills intensely work their Enviro 200s? Yesterday when I was in Paisley while travelling around on buses I noticed that there were two broken down Enviro 200s within a minute of each other. One on Causeyside Street, the other opposite the Piazza. Is this a common occurrance?

The 23 and 26 has had a right mish mash of E200 and E200MMcs on the routes in recent weeks

The 23 has had the 64 plate E200s and also no non branded E200s. The 26 on the other hand has had the branded 23/X23 E200MMCs on it recently.

Yes that's what I've noticed recently.

McGill's seem to be falling into the habit of putting the branded buses on a non branded route. I understand it can happen occasionally, but the majority of 23/X23 MMC's have been running around on the 26...

The longer MMCs are being used on the 26 to help with capacity, so nothing to do with mis-allocations.

Ohhh that makes sense.

Another route that I noticed was busy on Thursday was a 54 service from Paisley to Neilston at around noon. Quite well loaded.

I think they would be busy as there is no railway up from Paisley to Barrhead.

McGill's have handed the contracts for the 132 & 202 subsidised services back to the SPT, the 132 is to be operated by Craig's Of Cumbernauld & the 202 by Stuart's Coaches from this Sunday (25th).

Could this be due to the current covid situation or the start of winding down the Coatbridge depot operation?

I always find the Coatbridge operation to be a very random operation they acquired. It doesn't really mix in with their zone of Renfrewshire, Glasgow and Inverclyde. It wouldn't surprise me if they are giving up Coatbridge.

The Coatbridge operation was worthwhile when the Monklands commercial network was in operation but since all of that has been given up it is more like an outstation kind of operation now. If McGill's had done their homework prior to purchasing the services of the 5 Monklands operators they would have found that there was very little paying passengers but mostly concession card holders who used the services.

Yes, due to Covid.
SPT have terminated a number of MyBus contracts, as there is little prospect of them returning to normal in the short to medium term, and they can’t afford to continue paying the operator, even at the reduced rates. Many of these contracts include evening/Sunday local bus work, like the 132 & 202, and SPT have been in discussions with operators about the most cost effective way for them to cover the local service work. Hence, the change of operator on a number of routes this weekend, including the 6B/118, 202 and 248 which have new timetables now showing on the SPT website.

I just came across an image from 2017 of an open top Gemini with McGills branding. Looks like it operated on Service 17. Does anyone know where this bus is now?

Photo shows a red McGill’s open top Gemini.

In storage at Greenock. It mainly came out offering tours of Greenock on days when cruise ships docked in the town. That and special occasions and private hire, of which obviously there’s been none in 2020 sadly.

McGills are trying out one of Glasgow Airport's electric buses on the 757 this week.
