That's a very convoluted way of saying McGills don't keep their vehicles in shape.

I hope the TC throws the book at them for that excuse alone
I think in any case, any company that goes to the Traffic Commissioner more than once in a relatively short space of time, probably stands a good chance of more than a ‘telling off’. Big fines usually start coming in at this stage.

I don’t know I go back to the whole thing with First Scotland East. I just can’t see what made McGill’s (or indeed anybody else) be interested in buying the group. The division was an absolute basket case. Sure things ‘look’ better, but in reality it’s still got a lot of First-ness about it, but nowhere near as bad.

I remember when McGill’s bought out First and I was like oh, didn’t expect that, rather than wow what a great move. Equally I wasn’t like deary me what a stupid idea. It’s all very strange.

I'm interested in this case as it validates for me a personal theory that applies to any workplace, which is if an unwanted culture exists, it's extremely hard to change.

I'm not saying that is definitely the case here but considering what's changed it's solidifying the theory:

The owners have changed, management at the top has changed, even a lot of the vehicles have changed, yet problems continue to persist.

Is the issue with facilities? Quality of knowledge? Training? Staffing levels? Time? Money? Priorities?

Or just attitude of "that'll do"? How do you quash that if it's engrained culture.

I'd say it's definitely engrained culture. First may have walked from the area but its staff attitudes are clearly still there.

In my railway workplace, there is a massive laziness culture, but hell mend you if you dare say that. I imagine it's much the same in the buses too.

Sadly, very few people take pride in their work. I do, and every task I undertake I'll try to do it the best I can but there are definitely those who will do the least they can get away with and still get paid.

According to The Courier, Midland Bluebird have received another warning from the Traffic Commissioner after drivers were told to avoid DVSA checks at Stirling bus station if any lights were showing on the dashboard: https://www.thecourier.co.uk/fp/news/5452340/midland-bluebird-stirling-mcgills-bus-inquiry-warning/

Stirling bus operator reprimanded after drivers tipped off to dodge DVSA safety checks

Stirling bus operator McGill’s Midland Bluebird has been reprimanded by Scotland’s Traffic Commissioner over “totally unacceptable” tip-off messages sent to drivers by management.
The firm faced its second public inquiry in five months, presided over by Deputy Traffic Commissioner Kenneth Young
In October 2025, it was issued a “final warning” over vehicle maintenance.
During Monday’s hearing, held in Edinburgh, the inquiry heard how two messages were sent to McGill’s Midland Bluebird drivers via the onboard ticketing machines on Saturday April 12, 2025.
The first message told drivers to “be aware” that Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) staff were in Stirling bus station carrying out vehicle checks.
It advised McGill’s Midland Bluebird employees not to drive into the bus station if any warning lights were visible on their dashboard, telling them to park up elsewhere instead.
Forty minutes later, a second message was sent clarifying that drivers with warning lights should call the control room prior to entering the bus station.

The deputy traffic commissioner called the messages “totally unacceptable” and said he took a “very dim view” of the situation.
He said: “I don’t see how I can read that message other than: ‘Avoid DVSA if you’ve got a warning light’.”
He added: “If there was an operator that was deliberately avoiding DVSA, that would be a big concern.”

The transport company’s legal representative said: “The operator accepts that the messaging was not good”, but maintained that “many services” did go into Stirling bus station and were assessed by the DVSA on April 12.

‘Unacceptable’ messages were a ‘misunderstanding’, says bus boss

According to Graeme Leslie, McGill’s Midland Bluebird area director, the onboard messaging system is usually used by the duty manager to let bus drivers know about diversions.
At Monday’s inquiry, the deputy traffic commissioner questioned why a duty manager would consider it acceptable to send messages that could be interpreted as instructing drivers to avoid DVSA checks.
Mr Leslie said: “It’s my belief, sir, that that duty manager has made a mistake.”
It was confirmed that the member of staff responsible is no longer in a management position at the company.

However, Mr Young said the second message advising drivers to contact the control room was “quite carefully worded” and may have been written or dictated by a different person.
During the proceedings, Mr Leslie admitted that while investigating the April incident, it was discovered that another similar scenario took place on March 6, 2025, while a different duty manager was in charge.
The bus boss reiterated McGill’s Midland Bluebird’s previous apology for what he called “the misunderstanding”.
He explained that additional staff training had been brought in to avoid further issues.

Bus Users Scotland report claims customers are happy

As part of the public inquiry, the deputy traffic commissioner also considered evidence from the bus operator’s fleet engineer regarding emissions.
And Mr Young referenced a report from Bus Users Scotland about punctuality and customer satisfaction which he referred to as “positive”.

However, in February, Stirlingshire residents told The Courier that a slew of bus cancellations across the Stirling Council area had left passengers confused, angry and stranded.
Keith Brown MSP, who represents Clackmannanshire and Dunblane, met with senior McGill’s Midland Bluebird figures last month and said the firm “accepted that, despite efforts over the past three years, they have not delivered the level of service our communities deserve.”

Mark Ruskell MSP recently spoke out in favour of bringing Stirlingshire bus routes into public ownership. Image: Andrew MacColl/Shutterstock
And earlier this month, Mark Ruskell, MSP for Mid Scotland and Fife, called for Stirling bus routes to be brought under public control due to the number of complaints lodged about the operator.
But the deputy traffic commissioner focused on the messages sent to bus drivers, saying: “If I’m honest, the possibility of attempting to evade fair scrutiny by DVSA is the thing that worries me the most.”
He issued “a severe warning” to the company, with no further action thereafter.

If it’s an amber light on the dashboard then it should be noted on the defect card for inspection.

If it’s a red light, then the vehicle should not be departing the garage for service or if it occurs whilst in service then the driver should stop the vehicle and contact depot control.

Just gonna leave this here; https://www.mcgillsbuses.co.uk/mcgills-group-named-uks-top-bus-operator-97-customer-satisfaction

MCGILL’S GROUP NAMED UK’S TOP BUS OPERATOR WITH 97% CUSTOMER SATISFACTION

McGill’s Group has been crowned the UK’s top bus operator, achieving a standout 97% customer satisfaction rating in new independent research.

The results, published by watchdog Transport Focus as part of its annual Your Bus Journey survey, highlight a strong rise in passenger satisfaction across Scotland – but place McGill’s Group, owned by leading Scottish businessmen Sandy and James Easdale, firmly at the top of the table.

The survey, based on around 50,000 passenger journeys, recorded overall satisfaction in Scotland at 91%, with McGill’s outperforming all other operators by a clear margin.

Sandy Easdale said: “These figures show that bus services in Strathclyde are already delivering for passengers, with some of the highest satisfaction levels in Scotland and the UK. Against that backdrop, it completely undermines the case for spending £400 million on bus franchising in Glasgow and the surrounding regions. When passengers in Strathclyde are already among the most satisfied in the country – and McGill’s is delivering a 97% approval rating – it begs the question: what exactly are politicians and campaigners trying to fix?”

James Easdale added: “The experience in Manchester should be a warning, not a blueprint. Despite huge public subsidy, franchising there is delivering significantly lower satisfaction than what we are already achieving commercially in the west of Scotland. Rather than pouring hundreds of millions of pounds of taxpayers’ money into a risky structural overhaul, the focus should be on supporting operators to build on what is clearly already working for passengers.”

Ralph Roberts, chairman of McGill’s Group, said: “We are absolutely delighted to be named the UK’s top bus operator with a customer satisfaction rating of 97%. That is a phenomenal endorsement from our passengers and a reflection of the hard work and commitment of our teams across the business.

“At a time when the industry is facing significant challenges, these results show what can be achieved through sustained investment, strong local engagement and a relentless focus on delivering for customers.”

Mr Roberts, one of the most respected figures in the UK transport industry, added: “We have invested £95 million in new zero-emission buses, upgraded depots and improved services – and it is hugely encouraging to see passengers recognising those efforts in such a positive way.

“While we are proud of this achievement, we are not complacent. We will continue to listen to our customers and work every day to deliver the reliable, high-quality services that communities across Scotland deserve.”

The survey also found that passengers in Strathclyde are the most satisfied in Scotland, with an overall approval rating of 93%.

In terms of other operators, publicly owned operator Lothian Buses was placed on 94% approval whilst the Bee Network in Manchester received an 86% approval rating – some 11 points behind McGill’s Group.

Feels a bit ironic considering Midland Bluebird have had the traffic commissioner on their tails twice in the past year.

Why? Lets be fair here, that is for the West of Scotland Operation. The Traffic commissioner is on it's tail for the EAST of Scotland operation from 2025, and that is mainly linked to Stirling depot.

There is issues within the Forth valley area but there has been some investment with new stock etc hopefully Stirling has seen an influx of better stock. Its not the world best bus area, and if it wasn't for that uni it would be alot worse. It has happened before with Stagecoach and First.

The latest disposals of former First buses have seen Streetlites 0432, 0445, 0464, 0467 and ADL E300 8493 head to Ensign, whilst Streetlite 0441 has gone to Clyde Metals for scrap.

Thanks for the update. Has any of the former First buses that were previously sold found new homes?

One of the e300s (McGills 8487 / First 67753 - SN62APO) re-entered service with First at York Pullman.
Thought that was funny, First buying back one of their old buses, then again, it'll still look the same inside and out. Theoretically they could just stick some First logos on the side and it could be back in service asap.
My guess is it will get the new paintwork though.

The Mercedes Citaro demonstrator (BV26HWA) has moved to Bannockburn depot over the weekend, and is expected to spend the last week of its loan period with the McGill's Group operating on the X10/X10A between Stirling - Balfron - Glasgow.

No bus tracking on the 60 in Edinburgh today. It was the same a few days at the beginning of last week. Are they short of buses or drivers at Livingston or is it a tracking problem. This is on the Midland Bluebird site as bustimes are not tracking anything.

How long will it be before Mcgills will be back at the traffic commissioner for not running services at Midland Bluebird? They seem to have bus and driver availability issues.

There seems to be a tracking issue with the company. I've just looked at them on Bustimes for a trip I'm planning and only 16 buses have tracked today.
Hopefully more than that are out

A quick glance at the company website suggests around 80 buses are currently tracking.
I believe bustimes have said they no longer use the tracking for operators on the Passenger platform, so bus times definitely won’t be your best source for up to date information regarding Midland Bluebird.
