The suggestion is that they were a measure to improve reliability.
Surprising (former removal of Cosham calls) as ISTR the Cardiffs have quite a long turn around at Portsmouth Harbour. Reminds me of the infuriating omission of Brockenhurst by XC since Covid, thus removing a call that had been made IIRC since the late 80s.

In the same area, anything at all interesting for SWR? (Even one or two peak extras being added back would count as "interesting", and tweaks to the off-peak timetable definitely would).

The calls at Brockenhurst by XC are returning in May, on all services except one (1O24 at 2001).

Ah - OK - that's good.
I do wonder why they were ever removed. If it's seen as possible to re-instate them this May, why was it deemed impossible to call there in the immediate post-Covid period?
Just because a station call has not been included does not mean that "it was deemed impossible". There a very large number of contributing factors to why a station call is or is not included, and the only one who will know all of the reasons are XC.

Nonetheless it's bizarre to me that a Brockenhurst call was deemed OK to make from approximately 1987 (not sure of the exact date) to 2019, and is again from this May, but not the intervening period. Especially as the call was made during the busiest period for this line in terms of trains per hour, which was from around the late 90s to 2019.

I don't understand how it can be objectively seen as bizarre. There is a very clear and obvious major factor involved in the call being dropped that you cite, and of which the medium term effects were not fully known. Given that scenario caution in reintroduce something which may have made sense in a different time seems entirely sensible and rational. Clearly by the re-introduction a value is seen to Brockenhurst calls, but that doesn't mean the data has always shown a value since Covid.

Just sounds like a typical XC attitude to me. Over the top during the pandemic and reluctant to budge ever since. I’ll never understand them.

The calls have a low cost in terms of reliability though, i.e turnaround time at Bournemouth. I can see the point in a one-off removal of the call if the southbound service is running late - but given that there were no apparent reliability concerns with the call up to 2019, and appear to be no reliability concerns with the call from this May, I don't understand why there were such concerns between Covid and now.

But perhaps @dk1 has hit the nail on the head!

Although it’s no big loss, XC removed all their Wilmslow calls and they’ve never been reinstated either.

Do many XCs go that way? As "it's no big loss" I presume not, but I thought they all went via Stoke. Might be wrong though.

There used to be an early service to Bristol, then two services are routed via Wilmslow (down morning, up evening) to create a path for the extra Stoke-Manchester rush hour stopper. Even longer ago there used to be a late down service which was occasionally useful from Birmingham.
The early service to Bristol could have been useful but I never needed to use it when it ran.

I suppose those that do assist with route retention purposes. Not all appear to call at Crewe either.

The up evening Crewe call got dropped a number of years ago, yes. The only time they serve Wilmslow is on diversions when the Stoke line is closed, sometimes at weekends. So route retention definitely useful.

There’s also a very early up morning service which never called but uses a variety of routes, eg Styal line to Crewe, then Stoke. And a very late down service with no calls booked between Stoke and Manchester, which presumably uses all sorts of routes to fit around things like engineering closures.

Cheers. I recall them calling at Congleton too.

No changes to the GN inners despite ETUG saying this was apparently confirmed. I am hoping this will change by Friday.

GTR times are up now, but take them with a grain of salt as I said - nothing appears to have changed on the GN end which is contrary to expected.
The ETUG minutes form a while back had said Dec 26 was being looked at. Not May. The GDH services starting back from HFN referred to two AM and PM peaks. And I suspect done to remove need for platform staff rather than passengers..

No Paddington service from Reading between 0115 and 0413 on Saturday morning, so Reading will be opened up for the two Gatwick services at 0228 and 0330.
True, but there is additionally an 02.34 arrival from Paddington, so the station needs to be open for that.

Do they? Can’t see anything SX in RTT. I thought they’d stopped during the pandemic when XC had a wobble.

Ok maybe it did a Broken hearse then during Covid, and lost its services.

There were services in the May 2019 timetable, for example 1H09 06b58 Congleton to Manchester, 05:57 from Birmingham New Street.
Broken hearse?
Brockenhurst I guess eventually!
Also 1O30 18:27 Manchester Piccadilly-Bournemouth.

It seems that the 18:06 LNWR service to Bletchley will be extended to Northampton and the 18:26 LNWR service to Birmingham New Street extended to Walsall. Interesting….

A station doesn't have to be 'open' to allow people to leave it. Passengers can be directed to leave by a single exit, with no one allowed to dawdle in leaving the station.

Both before Covid and when XC decided to reduce the number of stations they called at (ie at one stage Winchester & Chesterfield were limited calls by XC) on grounds of Social Distancing to reduce local usage.

But did nothing in the busy West Midlands Corridor where overcrowding due to local usage is higher than the number of folk heading to Basingstoke from Winchester etc

Looking at the GA changes Stowmarket calls are now in all London - Norwich services except the 1 fast up and down service on Saturdays. This has enabled tidying up of Norwich departures in M-S to be at xx:00 and xx:30 (except the 08:57 SO fast mentioned above). This gives Stowmarket 4 trains an hour to Ipswich when the 2 hourly Peterborough service or the extra Cambridge to Ipswich service runs! Not bad for a town of only just over 20,000 people!

It acts as a railhead for quite a large area and annual usage is fast approaching one million. Higher than that if including connecting passengers. That will greatly assist with connections for Bury and Ely/Cambridge/Peterborough should there be issues with the direct route via Thetford from Norwich.

One thing I noticed is that Buckenham, for some strange reason, gains two extra calls from May.

Currently it has the 09:21 to Norwich and 17:11 to Lowestoft on weekdays, the 10:18 to Lowestoft and 16:19 to Norwich on Saturdays and 6tpd (each way) on Sundays.
From May, on top of the above services, the 10:07 to Lowestoft and 16:17 to Norwich will additionally stop there on weekdays and the 09:17 to Norwich and 17:05 to Lowestoft will additionally stop there on Saturdays. No increase to Sunday frequency.

I wonder why it'll have its service doubled Mon-Fri from May? Always thought of it as a basket case station which GA would close if they could. It's a good change for rail enthusiasts and birdwatchers, I guess?

A senior manager lives but a stones throw from Buckenham Station ;)
