May 2014 timetable changes

A long way off still, and I'm not sure how much of it is set in stone, but I thought we could do with a central thread for this, like we have done for every other change.

Times are now up on OpenTrainTimes, and will be on RTT and NRE in due course.

Some changes I've noticed already are Ayr-Glasgow Central now being 4tph throughout the week in addition to Saturdays, as well as the well-publicised changes on trans-Pennine services. I'm sure I'll find more!

It looks like Northern Rail must consider the boost to services at South Bank a success as they've kept it at an hourly service throughout the week (compared to 3/4 trains per day Monday - Saturday and nothing on Sunday as it was a year ago).

It's showing that all Chester-Manchester services that call at Heaton Chapel and Levenshulme will depart Chester 4 minutes earlier from the May timetable change, but the ones that don't remain unchanged. It looks like they've done this so that services stopping at Heaton Chapel and Levenshulme are more evenly spaced out but it will mean a shorter turnaround time at Chester (so less chance of delays being recovered) and will also mean connections from Merseyrail services will be less good.

The crewe-shrewsbury-euston timetable is as expected completely useless and is just a token service. Have Virgin confirmed that they have accepted this unsatisfactory path?

If the 11:33 service called at Whitchurch I might have been in a position to use it, although it would still have arrived later than travelling via Crewe on the 11:40 departure (a Pendolino). I don't believe the new Shrewsbury services will achieve anything.

Does anyone know about the London Midland Crewe to Euston timetable? I thought peak-time services were being improved from May 2014, but nothing has changed. Are LM yet to implement the changes into the system, or have they been postponed/scrapped?

With an intriguing 1611 Oban-Dalmally-Oban in layover time - for school or college traffic, which will use the very early Glasgow-Oban?

The new Todmorden service's run through and start from a range of destination include Blackpool, Southport, Kirkby, Wigan Wallgate and Clitheroe.

Also a few of the service that leave Manchester Piccadilly are changed by 2 or 3 minutes. That should be fun on the first day as hundreds of commuters will not have checked the time and miss trains home.

As expected the Manchester Airport-Liverpool have been retimed to xx55 and the Hazel Grove-Preston retimed to xx03

The 1702 Carmarthen - Manchester Piccadily service is timed from May to serve Pyle at 1820. Certainly this would be welcomed and saves people rushing for the 1710 swanline service from Swansea.

Mind you the 2315 Cardiff - Carmarthen service seems to have disapeared

A one that's slightly tickled me is the 1622 Newcastle to Whitehaven has been extended to Barrow. I reckon this journey is about 36 stops long now (inc request stops) feel sorry for who ever has to announce that

Oooh - a train from Todmorden to Blackburn! Via Manchester Victoria... !

And a slightly odd single working from Huddersfield to Blackburn!

The equally odd, long-standing 0555 all stations Buxton to Clitheroe will be no more - it's being replaced by a 0653 all stations Buxton to Clitheroe instead!

Some fairly major re-timings around East Lancashire, and a few odd services. It looks like a 'holding' timetable in that respect, pending further and more permanent changes still to come.

At almost four and a half hours for the end-to-end journey; if it's ever substituted by a Pacer, I feel sorry for whoever travels on it!

If this new virgin service is true, it will mean passengers can avoid paying full fare between Stafford and Shrewsbury and travel on a Stafford to Crewe ticket to Shrewsbury. Or travel from Crewe to Telford on a Crewe to Stafford ticket.

I haven't checked, but assuming it is not a mapped route, the tickets are only valid on the through trains rule. I quote the RailUK fares guide that says the rule doesn't apply when boarding/alighting at a station that isn't the origin/destination of the ticket.

I wonder why Audley End is so well served. I saw something once about an age-old agreement to stop everything there, but surely must be rubbish like the Stockport viaduct thing.

There are other services which could be 323 operated, it's just whether they are any 323s which could operate.

Had a look and was really pleased to see an hourly through service from Blackpool North to Huddersfield, including a stop at Stalybridge. Ideal for visiting some of the best station bars in the country.

That's been known about since last October. It's to improve unit and platform efficiency on Victoria services.

It's really weird that other local stations aren't served, especially Whittlesford. There was talk of doing this service with 379s in the dying days of NXEA but without calling at other stations the service seems pointless. Perhaps an ORCATS raid on XC by GA?

Not an extension of the Cambridge to Norwich trains, it doesn't even connect with them and is booked for a 317. Seems a shame really :P

Audley End is suspiciously well served isn't it :P Although not everything stops there:
