Maximum Fares

It has just dawned on me today that DB has a maximum fare for a single journey, €129. So what ever route you choose, once the fare hits that magical number, any further distance is free.

i.e. Munich-Cologne costs €129 as does Munich-Hamburg direct, however Munich-Cologne-Hamburg, which is longer, also costs €129 and carrying on to Lübeck costs no extra either

ofcourse, I have a bahncard50, so the maximum I pay is €64,50

do any other railway operators have maximum fares?

Irish Rail has €69.90 single, €74.80 5-day return, €84.30 monthly return for journeys within the Republic of Ireland. Killarney to Dublin Connolly for example is the same as Tralee to Dundalk.

That kind of sensibility would not work in Britain. The TOCs/DfT are of the believe that there will always be someone stupid enough to pay a certain fare. More fool them. Can bet half the people who use such fares are MPs. Would explain the massive expenses...
