GMPTE have a maximum fare cap of £3.60 within the Manchester boundary which can be great value if you're travelling between stations on either side of the border e.g Appley Bridge - Glossop A good 50 mile trip or not so good value if going between say Bolton - Salford Crescent 5-10 miles.
Do all PTE's areas have maximum fare caps or is Manchester unique and good value would you say? Cheers

MPTE (Merseytravel) have their off peak "cap" sort of at £4.50, in the form of the All Zone Saveaway.

You can go from Southport/Meols Cop to Chester (about 50miles).

Also obviously lets you go out of the boundary by rail up to Ormskirk, Chester and Ellesmere Port.

Merseyrail (a seperate organisation) cap their off peak day fare at £4.40, (a big ORCATS raid to try and get 100% revenue rather than 25% of the Saveaway!).

Errr, Smethwick!
Do all of the metropolitan counties have some kind of PTE/ITA day ticket which is effectively the maximum anyone would need to pay and which, hopefully, ticket offices would automatically give? I can't think of any exceptions off the top of my head but I'm sure someone will correct that if they can.

In the West Midlands the One-Day Network All-Zones ticket (peak) at £6.80 and Network Daytripper (off-peak) at £5.50 would do the trick.

Derbyshire Wayfarer acts as an effective cap on the CDR fare between Derby and Sheffield. I'm sure they'd set it higher than £8.80 if the wayfarer didn't exist. It's also valid as far as Burton, Uttoxeter and New Mills, but e.g. Derby to Edale has a fare that is set higher, I don't know whether ticket offices would offer a wayfarer for this journey if you didn't specifically ask for one.

...And yet I've never actually seen anyone buy one! Most people, if they even know there's a choice, buy Saveaways because for 10p you get a huge amount more flexibility. The only exception would be for those who get railcard discount.
