could someone (if the data is available) post the 0-60mph times for these units? also if possible the 0-30mph times.

Best comparison I can give is the various DMUs that have seen use along the South TPE route.

Heading East from Scunthorpe (55mph line speed), a 185 will reach that just after the Brigg Road bridge (approx 1 minute give or take a second or 2), with a 158 taking an additional 5 seconds or so. A class 170 however takes quite a bit longer (approx another 10 seconds) to reach the line speed.

The figures recorded for 0-60 in a rail publication are :

185 - 68 seconds
158 - 98 seconds
170 - 114 seconds.

I wonder how the 400hp 158/159s fare here, (northern have just 1 of these). No mention of those horrid pacers. The 3 car 144s at only 20 or so tons and 75mph max seem very quick off the mark.

Having travelled in all three types probably hundreds of times over the past few years, I'd say that the figures here are exactly what each feels like to the passenger with all other things being equal.

The only other comment I have is that many years of using the Edinburgh-Glasgow shuttle on 170s always made me think that they're pretty good at picking up their heels at speed, say going from 80 to 100 smartly, but this may have just been the same bits of line day in day out giving that impression. They do feel pretty tame pulling away from a standstill I'm afraid, and as for climbing away from Inverness and up Slochd with one engine out...

The E&G route is of course (apart from Cowlairs) as near as dammit flat!

It certainly is, but I was thinking of accelerating out of the Winchburgh tunnel eastbound, which may have given a false impression of power.

They (the 170s) are positively slothful out of Bridge of Allan when heading up to Dunblane.

Nowhere near as slothful as the old 101s though!
