Currently sat here with a ballast slowly approaching me in the distance
The camera is rolling the video and I'm standing her typing this thread.

So my question is...what is the maximum speed an engineering train can go in a possession?
As I stand here, there are no stop marker boards on the rails, but I suppose drivers must be cautious of workers
But what is the max speed ballast train can travel whilst en route to a work site?

Ps the train still hasn't passed

Many thanks for your replies
Work site was Clifton ville tunnel hove today
Whilst the possession ran for about 15 miles all the way to wivelsfield
I wouldn't want to be driving at 5mph the whole section from Haywards heath to Brighton ahaha

What does it say about a train's speed when operating under degraded working?

You travel at a speed that you can stop short of any obstruction. That way you can't really go wrong can you!

It's like if a signaller asks me to go "Under Caution" for something, I'll do a speed which I can stop short of any obstruction, so that may mean as little as 5 mph in thick fog, however if I have full visibility, it might be 10 or 15 mph, it also depends on the gradients too.

At the end of the day, any delay goes down to NR, because you're driving cautiously and carefully and if anything should go wrong and you're doing a low speed, then there's much less chance of them being able to throw the book at you for an "alleged" offence of speeding, which the OTMR download will prove.

You must

Make the movement at caution

Not Exceed 25 mph at any point in the journey when entering , making a movement within , or leaving the possession

Make any movement in a work site at no greater than 5 mph unless you are given specific instructions by the ES or a SWL

Be prepared to stop before reaching a handsignal that is being displayed

Hope that helps a little , we were briefed on these changes a couple of week ago
