mature students railcard - proof required ?

hi ,
i am applying for the matured student railcard which is 16-25 one and have some queries.
so while applying the proof is added and the railcard is issued but if ongoing extra proof of identity or passport is required ?
in short if the ticket checking staff is allowed to ask for passport/dl once the railcard is produced and it is not altered ?

No, once the railcard is issued, you shouldn't be asked for passport/dl in regards to the railcard. That's why the proof part is handled by the railcards team. Same as the Disabled Railcard, on-train staff don't need to know why you are entitled to it, that's already been verified which is why you hold it

Once issued No other forms of ID required, also get a plastic ticket wallet from the ticket office to store RC and tickets in one place.

A lot of TFL staff are not aware that mature full time students are entitled to a 16-25 railcard. Having said that, if any member of staff asks, then just showing the railcard should be sufficient proof of entitlement.

exactly this.. i mean i am late 30s and look as well.. showing 16-25 railcard will be a bit weird.. does the scan thingy shows my original age as well if someone check the railcard details pls?

No, not at all, it does not reveal any personal info except your name and when it expires, which is what shows on the digital one anyway

If you're worried about being challenged why not print off the relevant piece that explains mature students are entitled to the railcard, carry it with you, and show it if challenged?

This has been an issue in a lot of places. In 1990 I became a mature student and noticed an advert by Lloyds Bank offering a free Student Railcard for opening an account. I was aged 38 and I checked with BR that they had no objection to someone of my age holding that card and using it for discounts. Next I phoned my local branch of Lloyds to check when the card would be issued, and was soundly dismissed by a witheringly rude person who seemed to think I was 'trying it on.' Eventually she said 'Look, You're not getting one'. Goodbye.' and hung up. I was motivated to get confirmatory paperwork and contact Lloyds head office. The end result was a free Student Railcard and a written apology from Lloyds Bank.

I'm in my 40s and have been a mature student for the past few years and had a 16-25 railcard. Other than some slightly surprised looks from staff in the booking office when buying one once, I've had no queries at all as to my entitlement to it in the course of using it (and tbh most of the time, it barely gets checked).

There is - it's called a 16-25 Railcard. Or are you arguing that there should be yet another variety of railcard, in spite of the fact that most people consider there to be too many?

Perhaps doing so again would avoid such issues.

Doing so would be a good idea but the 'issues' avoided are pretty much non-existent.

A correctly issued mature student 16-25 railcard will indeed have "Mature Student" or as the internal knowledgebase now specifies simply "Student" in the date of birth field.

Do you look like your photo? Maybe they were trying to verify that you were the person eligible for the card.
