The EMT timetable; Trains leave Nottingham for Matlock at the :18 and arrive in at the :53. So...2 trains.

But what do the trains do for 30 mins at Nottingham?

There are 3 trains on the Nottingham to Matlock services, Monday to Friday 2 diagrams should be 156s and in the winter the other diagram should be 2x153 and in the summer it should be 1 153 in the morning and 2 153s in the afternoon. However it is not uncommon for a diagram to be a 158 a single 153 or the 2x153 diagram a 156.

Sit in the platform? I don't think the Matlock service is interworked with anything else.

Three diagrams, generally the same units all day long with little interworking, the only one I can think of off the top of my head is the 0656 Ambergate to Derby which goes on to form the 0740 Crewe service.

Pre-blockade at least, the Northern unit from Leeds would usually be dropped on top of the Matlock during its layover - so it wouldn't solely be occupying a platform for the whole time.
