Is it just me or has there been a lot of signalling issues recently on the southern parts of the WCML?

Yet again, a signalling problem at Bletchley! And one at Hemel. Yes Matt there has. Specially on Sundays!

There seems to be lots of Track Circuits and Axle counter failures. These would be very affected by ballast and track work I imagine.

The East Coast has been in bits all day too due to a one under. Not a good day to travel to Scotland.

Buses to Euston? A few factual errors in that story. Following the completion of signalling repair work around Hemel Hempstead, from about 11am it was a case of London Midland running a reduced, half-hourly service from Euston at xx:04/xx:34 which ran as far north as Bletchley, returning from there at xx:24/xx:54. Buses ran Bletchley to Northampton via Milton Keynes and Wolverton.

As for VT, until around 13:00 it was a case of them diverting and terminating services at Northampton. Passengers were provided with coaches between Northampton and Hemel Hempstead/Tring, from where they had to use the half-hourly all stations services into London.

From about 13:00 Virgin started running four trains per hour into and out of London Euston, with 1tph to Liverpool, Manchester, Preston (& beyond) and Wolverhampton. The remaining trains terminated at or north of Northampton, as when and where possible to attempt to restore a near normal service as much as possible on the mid and northern sections of the WCML. This was not helped by a person being hit by a train at Euxton Balshaw Lane at about 12:15. Also from about 13:00, the aforementioned LM services were cut back to Tring. Throughout the developments in the Bletchley and Milton Keynes areas, Marson Vale services were replaced by as-required taxis between Bletchley and Fenny Stratford, with train services running between Fenny Stratford and Bedford.

As it stands at the minute, LM are running the 2tph between London Euston and Bletchley, with an additional service running about approximately hourly intervals between London Euston and Northampton. The Marston Vale continues to operate as outlined above. VT also continue to operate a reduced service, with tickets being accepted on EM, GW+XC and WS services. Ticket acceptance was withdrawn from CH due to overcrowding on their services.

The East Coast has been in bits all day too due to a one under. Not a good day to travel to Scotland.
Between Grantham and Peterborough in the Stoke area I believe, which when added to the oe mentioned just above this and another one-under at High Brooms, today's total is a rather unfortunate three :(

Not awfully fun if travelling up the West Anglia route either due to 'O L Leigh' being on-shift lineside equipment problems (a fairly high number of peak period cancellations and Tott Hale starters on LE, with SX running at 2tph instead of the usual 4), or on the South Coast following an Electrostar losing a shoe near the four-way convergences just east of Ford!

There are also signalling problems between Coventry and Nuneaton, and a couple of ESRs between Birmingham New Street and Wolverhampton, however neither seem to be contributing too much to the already (slightly ;)) troubled WCML.

Edit @ 16:45 - Word just in of another person having been hit by a train, this time at Market Harborough. Trains are being diverted via Corby at Manton Junction, so avoiding the affected area. Seems to be getting on for problems blocking (or having blocked) most of the mainlines from London towards Northern England and Scotland today!

David Cameron was caught up in the disruption and described this country's railways as "a mess". Someone should quietly remind him which party was in government when the decision was made to privatise the railways.

His party's theory at the time was that their friends in business would be able to make a much better job of running the railways.

We went from Wilmslow to Liverpool and back on Tuesday. Coming back on a mid-afternoon LM service Lime St to Crewe, we crawled at about 10mph from Weaver Junction to Hartford. This was said to be due to a signal failure at Hartford.

iirc the power comes in from the grid at denbeigh hall junc there is a power/sub station on the up side, it was a hot spot for our traveling friends in there caravans to break into, not saying this is the cause, but something has to be done, that is what 3 times now it has happened.

More than 3, but its more to do with the signalling equipment.

Clearly network rail did an excellent job with MK signalling/track layout changes over the Bank Holiday...

When people say power failure...how can this be caused?
-Just interested into this sort of stuff how it comes about and is resolved....
how did it effect such a large line??

I suspect it's the signalling power distribution circuits. I also suspect axle counters make the situation worse (another false economy) as power failures will cause them to show occupied until they are reset. But I'm prepared to stand to be corrected on that!

Same way a computer crashes...

They still use wires, they still use PGAs, and the still use Microcontrollers and software, so things can go wrong with any of the above. wires freze, break etc. PGAs and uCs fail, software fails blah blah...

I think that you will find that it is the 40+ year old cable that feeds the power to Bletchley PSB not taking very kindly to being moved in readiness for all the alterations that will take place in the area. Nothing to do with axle counters etc, when the power supply goes off, everything goes out - no indications in anything.
