Massive co-ordinated attack on major websites

Micro-blogging service Twitter was taken offline in what the company believes was a co-ordinated attack.

The popular site has been subject to a so-called denial-of-service attack, according to the firm's official blog.

Denial-of-service attacks take various forms but often involve a company's servers being flooded with data in an effort to disable them.

The outage began Thursday morning but the geographic scale of the attack is still not known.

High-profile websites including Google, Facebook and Twitter have been targeted by hackers in what is described as a "massively co-ordinated attack".

Other sites such as the blogging platform Live Journal were also reportedly targeted.

Twitter was taken offline for more than two hours whilst Facebook's service was "degraded", according to the firms.

Google said it had defended its sites and was now working with the other firms to investigate the attack.

"Google systems prevented substantive impact to our services," the company said in a statement.

The company has not confirmed which services were targeted in the attack, but it is thought that its e-mail service Gmail and and video site YouTube were under fire.

Well it wasn't strictly hackers hacking into the sites, it's just there's not a suitable word to describe someone who performs a Denial Of Service attack on a website... other that a DOSSER

And the Denial Of Service attack can only work by using the PCs of people who don't have sufficient protection on their PCs. That is the main way that people can get private details. It takes a bit more effort to hack into a companies database and extract details that way
