Marylebone station NSE markings.

Today I visited Marylebone station for the first time and admired the architecture and how small the station is, I noticed near the underground entrance was some Network South East markings.

It got me wondering, are they original or reproduction ?

It certainly gave me a strong sense of nostalgia of my younger days in London.

They're the original NSE logos; they've never been replaced.

NSE signage has been removed from at least some Moorgate line stations, but only comparatively recently. Much of the signage was effectively baked into the platform tunnel metal lining material, and apparently being an underground station it wasn’t permitted to use vinyl to quickly cover it.

There are remnants all over the southeast though, and it’s been discussed in a few threads before, for example at Southampton Central a tiled mural the length of the footbridge includes NSE styled features, and that’s unlikely to ever be changed.

Marylebone is grade 2 listed so removing things like that are often far more trouble than they're worth - they would have been in place when it was listed in 1996 so that will form part of the listing.

Another example is Nottingham station which is always repainted in the same non corporate colour scheme - I think it was originally applied by Regional Railways.

I remember when Stamford station was restored by East Midlands Trains the BR corporate lollipop lighting affixed to the canopy attracted the ire of the then MD because he felt it was unfortunate to have spent a lot of time restoring the station to it's former glory to leave some 70s relics in place - they actually went through the process of consulting over their removal which eventually went ahead.

At Bank (W&C) the NSE flashes on thge platform edges are still there indicating where the doors line up on the 1940 stock. The Drain has not been part of British Rail for 28 years, the 1940 stock has been gone for even longer!

This is the reason. The "station", as far as the franchise agreement/station leases go, doesn't extend to the far walls of the tunnels. Only the platforms and I think up-to/including the lights are actually GN's responsibility. That's why it still has a bunch of NSE markings and that big map poster.

Yes. But GN not being permitted to revinyl someone else’s tunnel isn’t the same as GN not being permitted to revinyl because it’s an underground station. It could be done and there are no practical or physical restraints, including on safety grounds, to do so.

as do many stations in the southeast. and random trackside features such as the reused NSE ticket box at nutbourne level crossing previously discussed on this forum.

I think its more a case that it has survived against the odds rather than that it is preserved. Whether it will survive the current Underground escalator/entrance rebuild remains to be seen.

Popped down to Moorgate to visit the scene of the tube crash, then travelled along to Essex Road, it took me back to the 90s seeing all the NSE markings and route map, also noticed at Old Street and Highbury & Islington what appeared to have NSE tilings.

I think the route maps date from electrification in the 1970s.

NSE missed a trick then by not doing this when the 92 stock was introduced, i always thought the station refurb was done at the same time the trains were introduced

Essex Road is truly a time warp location, one side NSE and other Great Northern, while Highbury & Orpington and Old Street tiling looks to be from the late 80s or early 90s.

Essex Road is one of my favourite stations! The utter decrepitness of the place, despit attempts to tart it up are something to be seen. The spiral staircase is an absolute must!

The signage on the Northern City Lane was vinyled over in 2018. Here are some photos I took at the time, if you look carefully enough you can see the old lettering beneath.

The over stickers are poorly fitted in some cases and already starting to peel. I was tempted to try and and completely pull one off!

When fitted the new signage was filthy. Maybe it was a deliberate attempt to fit in with the general ambiance of the stations on this part of the line

Happily there is still copious Network South East branding remaining at Essex Road. Hopefully this will remain as it is trackside.

Apart from the nostalgia aspect which is a big plus for me anyway, I find NSE colours to be very British as it's similar to the British flag.

IMO a great era for the railways in the South East.

Yesterday I spotted the signal box at Littlehamton, despite very faded I could make out the old NSE logo.

The old NSE boundaries are still used for various reasons, including the Notwork Network rail card
