Marylebone signal box

With the pace of closures stepping up, I've been out and about photographing signal boxes recently.

Can anyone confirm the exact location of Marylebone signalling centre? According to Quail it's at the south end of Platform 1, however there's nothing there that looks like a signalling centre in the conventional sense. Looking around, my best guess is it's in the first floor of the station building, overlooking Boston Place which is the road which runs along the side of the station. Is this correct? If not, where exactly is it?

As you face the front of the station with the buffers behind you, the station buildings in front of you house the signallers, the drivers resource managers, train announcers etc...

You are indeed correct. The IECC is located above WH Smiths and contains only the signallers. The station announcers are in another part of the building, there are other admin functions that are located above the IECC.

Marylebone IECC was one of the first modern boxes in a lot of ways, one of those being that it is basically a nondescript office building which basically could be housed anywhere. It just so happens to be upstairs at Marylebone station.

If I uinderstand correctly then the thing to look for is the white wooden construction as seen here to the left of 168003.

That is where the dispatchers and the fitters live. It was supposed to also house the announcer and the local controller as well.

If you look at this picture and see the window that is right up in the roof, the IECC is just below that.

I visited this several times when it was new in the early 90s, as I was on the IECC support team at the time. Then again in 2001 as having moved on to higher things I was conducting some foreign visitors on an official visit. Between those times I believe the floor was extended, as seen by the way the very top floor above Smiths is set back at the original building line. I think also the interlocking and IECC equipment room was originally on the ground floor and was moved into the extended area, which is probably the reason for the extension, but I'm a bit sketchy on that as it was a long time ago!

Which goes to show that relocating solid state signalling is far easier than it is with the older relay interlockings.
