I see from the previous post that commuters may have been travelling on tracks with dodgy signalling for years What would have happened if the whole lot had gone up when trains were travelling at peak time ? St Johns Wood tunnel is not the Channel Tunnel. Is it too much to expect that Network Rail instigate some sort of enquiry along Health and Safety lines when this has been sorted especially if Chiltern were complicit in knowing that the wiring was life expired ?

Oh come off it, don't you think that's a bit melodramatic? Cable fires do happen, and for a whole variety of reasons. It was hardly 'life expired'

Trains may of got stuck (loss of point detection etc if the right signals got burnt) but there is ways around it.

As for H&S, it was a cable fire, how big was it?

Looks like at least two location cases in there, housing TPWS and TI21 receivers, so I guess it's more than just "cable" that's been damaged.

My knowledge of signalling is very limited. In fact I don't know anything at all, but as the fault has totally crippled Marylebone, could they not set a route from the last station on the entrance to Marylebone and just run an unsignalled shuttle there and back all day using the largest formation possible for the platform? If you know nothing is in there, what could go wrong?

Actually, just seen that the route splits before it reaches a station, and it looks like they are junction stations, so forget that idea!

In theory though, could that idea work elsewhere?

My understanding is that Paddington is too busy to allow for Chiltern sending services there too. Back in August 2011 they ran some services there but only on one platform.

Mildly concerning update from Network Rail:

"@NRE_Chiltern: There is now no estimate for the line to re-open at London #Marylebone"

Liverpool Street is too busy yet c2c manage to run some trains there when there is major disruption at Fenchurch Street. Sorry but some initiative required between FGW, Chiltern and NR.

I guess they've taken the view that running trains under degraded conditions will slow down the repair/investigation work to an unacceptable level. Better to sort it out in one hit and get the full service back ASAP.

Running trains into Paddington wouldn't affect the work at Marylebone, the line diverts at South Ruislip. It does make you wonder why Chiltern bother maintaining route knowledge into Paddington if they're not going to use it when the job is stopped.

The only logical explanation is a lack of space at Paddington, or on the single track section through Greenford.

The route knowledge would allow for late evening or Sunday diversions into Paddington when both Chiltern and GW are less busy. I don't know if they ever do this though!

You wouldn't be able to set a route at all. All the track circuits would probably be showing occupied, Infact most of the signals were probably showing no aspect, and points showing no detection. They COULD OF put Temporary block working in, but then they wouldn't be able to work inside the tunnel.

We are governed by the rule book, the closest thing you can have to what you say is TBW, but it's labour intensive and takes time to implement.

In short no, it's not as simple as what you said. There are all sorts of safety implications

There is no capacity for Chiltern services to run into PAD on weekdays. There is also only a certain amount of drivers who sign the route. The PAD option can be used for diversions but only planned diversions at weekends, none of which applies to the current situation.

Yep, this is their statement:

Dear Customer,
We are pleased to inform you that Marylebone station is now open. This is following a cable fire which affected signalling and meant that we could not run trains in and out of Marylebone station.

We are now running a normal service however, there may be some minor delays and last minute cancellations as we get the service back to normal. Some trains may also be formed of fewer carriages as trains are out of place due to the disruption.
