On the other side, there is a dark side to Martin Lewis. Do you remember (quite a few years ago now!) when Crown Currency Exchange collapsed? The story of the original collapse is here:

Moneysavingexpert.com at the time was very big on Crown Currency Exchange, and on the MSE forum, it was quite heavily pushed by users and admins alike. When they went bust, Martin Lewis was acting like some kind of consumer champion, but in reality, he was responsible for CCE having quite a few customers in the first place.

I've never liked him since that moment. I don't know how the forums are today, but back then, they were also very cult-like. I remember one bloke bragging because he was feeding his family on a quid a day, but it was really the worst possible diet you can imagine. And they were cheering him on!
Thank you for that. It is new to me, probably because I was working at the time, and never need currency exchange. If anyone is going to recommend something to others, it must be pretty much 100% safe. I never really looked at the forum on MSE simply because, in such things, you need to use them a lot to know who knows what they are talking about and who doesn't.

I probably should have explained that I had given a sum of money to the relative's child to be put aside until they became an adult. The suggestion was a long established organisation. a member of the financial services compensation scheme, which was offering a 'best buy' at the time. There was a branch nearby to them. I would have come up with alternatives which were more obscure. I was just impressed that he had made an effort. I must admit my 'go to' is Savings Champion but it lacks the pizzazz of MSE (who irritate me with the use of terms like ''em' and ''n') but they do bring money news to the masses.
