Hi folks,

I am running an exercise to understand how big the rail market is around the world. Was wondering whether anyone here have any credible sources to recommend in getting this. I am particularly interested in find information/list of current and new projects projected over the next 5-10 years around the world.

Any help will be obliged.

Best,

kng

There are different types of railways - some are passenger only, some are freight only, some do both as in the UK.

The level and quality of data would also vary between countries.

What specifically are you interested in? Volumes of passengers and freight or more financial matters? We need more information.

About each and every railway in this world is member of UIC: Union International des Chemins de Fer. Yes, just as for the coöperating national mailsystems, French is still the universal language for them. They have a plethora of not very well known publications and statistics on about every aspect of railway operating.
There are 2 kind of world-wide rail industry magazines (partly only online), IRJ=INternational Railway Journal and ditto RGI=Railway Gazette. Google will deliver the sites. Both do, as they are mainly aimed at industry and sales, kind of yearly overviews, subdivided for longdistance, freight, pax, commuter and light rail. I would assume that about anyone with the slightest knowledge of trading with railways etc. would know about them.
The well-known intelligence collector JANES also used to do heavy weight yearly tomes with essential details of all railways-in this world >90% are still state-owned national entities. My public library even has a few from the 90ies left standing. Understandably this has mainly gone online in this century. They do the same for aircraft and military shooting-etc. boystoys.

Not true - only "national carriers" such as SNCF, DB, Amtrak are members. For instance, Metro North, Government of Ontario (GO), Circumvesuviana, Ferrovia Nord, TfL, Long Island Railroad, etc are not members.

For this reason stats given for US and Canadian passenger rail are misleading.

Hi folks,

Sorry for not getting back sooner, I don't seem to get alerts but I'll fix that.

I am interested in the projected growth and size of the entire rail infrastructure market broken down by sectors (High Speed, Light Rail, Metro, Exclusive freight and mainline rail) and Regions (continental such as Americas, Europe, Africa and Asia Pacific).

I found something from UNIFE but their report costs a couple grand and wondered whether there were other reliable sources out there especially from the well informed forum members of RailUK.
