Just wondering if the railway returned to Market Drayton but only via one of the old routes, which line do you think it would make the most sense to reopen?

Nantwich-Market Drayton: benefits passengers for Audlem, Nantwich, Crewe and stations to Manchester, Liverpool & Lancashire

Stoke-Market Drayton: benefits Newcastle-u-Lyme, Stoke, Kidsgrove, Macclesfield, Uttoxeter & Derby

Wellington-Market Drayton: benefits Wellington, Telford (and Telford & Wrekin borough), Birmingham & the West Midlands, London

Also, of the routes listed, which project would be the least costly?

It's not a question of whether or not it's going to happen, it's a hypothetical scenario asking which of the 3 routes would be the most worthwhile to open.

The only one that sustains a (limited) bus service is Hanley via Newcastle.
Unfortunately that is the route that would be pretty much impossible to reinstate at the Stoke end, so we have a complete mismatch.

(Source: satellite mapping plus bustimes.org - I commend using these tools!)

It was never flagged up in the ATOC "Connecting Communities" - it may have been considered for a micro-second.

I did have an enjoyable morning in the House of Lords going through some of the issues with Lord Grocott , who has railway heritage and who understood things.

No one has really answered the original question though; if Market Drayton was allowed a reopened station and line to connect it back to the national network, which of the 3 routes would be most popular and most beneficial to passengers? Forget the cost and practicalities of the work needed to restore a line for a second, I'm asking which route would have the most demand?

Well it depends where passengers want to go I guess.

Post #5 made the point I'd have looked at - the corridor which sustains a bus service is to Hanley - which would mean Stoke.

If not that then probably Nantwich to allow connection to Crewe.

Both Crewe and Stoke would offer reasonable connectivity to other places. Wellington means you're then stuck with heading through Wolverhampton to Birmingham and that's already near capacity.

But I agree 100% with The Planner's post #4 - I don't think any of the above are even remotely viable.
