Mark Carney wins the Canadian election

I thought it was worth a discussion.

The situation in America and Trumps rhetoric over the last few months certainly didn’t seem to help the conservative candidate Pierre Marcel Poilievre.

It’ll be interesting watching how things play out with their noisy neighbours, and Carney seems to be prepared for the (completely pointless) fight in a way that seems more competent than what’s happening in Washington.

Speaking exclusively to the BBC as the polls were closing, Carney said he would only visit Washington when there was a "serious discussion to be had" that respected Canada's sovereignty.
Since Trump's re-election to the White House, the US president has repeatedly mentioned making Canada the "51st state" of America, and this was reiterated by the White House on Tuesday.
"The election does not affect President Trump's plan to make Canada America's cherished 51st state," White House deputy spokesperson Anna Kelly said.
Carney, who secured a historic victory for his Liberal Party in a snap election on Monday, said such a scenario was "never, ever going to happen".
"Frankly, I don't think it's ever going to happen with respect to any other [country]... whether it's Panama or Greenland or elsewhere," he added.
However, he said there was a "win-win possibility" for his country if it could secure a deal with the US and also build on trading relationships with the European Union and the UK.

Interesting that all the border regions west of Lake Superior/Thunder Bay voted Conservative, with a majority of seats in Alberta and (marginally) BC.

I guess Canada is politically a bit like the USA, with the coasts relatively liberal and the inland areas dominated by oil/gas and agriculture who tend to vote more rightwards. There was even something on the BBC the other day about a rally by a group in Alberta who would actually welcome being the 51st state. But I imagine those areas would be most badly hit if their exports were tariffed.

I can relate to Alberta. It has mostly been federal and provincial conservative but the old school type until about 8 years ago when things went further right provincially. Some of this provincially was from a merger of the provincial conservatives (centre right) merging with wild rose (far right) to become the united conservatives becoming far right who then had frequent falling outs with Carney's Liberal party predecessor.

I could see Carney working with the NDP or Bloc Quebec if he needs to pass things as a majority.

Domestic policy maybe a challenge to get through, however key foreign policy, especially if Trump continues with his current attitude, will be easy to get through parliament where required.

Pierre Poilievre's by election in Battle River Crowfoot, Alberta is a week tomorrow. It will be interesting to see what happens to the Conservative vote share considering it was 82% last time. Over 200 independents are running in the riding although they are mainly statement/paper candidates as part of the Longest Ballot Committee. If say Bonnie Critchley puts in a strong performance and his vote share dropped to ~60% his leadership might be in real trouble though.


Mark Carney still seems to be fairly popular overall despite some alleged capitulation to Trump.
