Hi all,

I'm most of the way through a fun but exhausting PTG tour of Madagascar. Most of our group are from Denmark and I've been asked a question about BR Mark 3 sleeping cars. Apparently 10 of these where used in Denmark for a time, but I can't find any detailed info as to which ones. The person who asked is compiling a history, so if you have information please reply.

Thanks

Gary

Just found this but more info, ideally in English would be appreciated.

From the Dec 1998 issue of Rail Express:

Danish Sleepers return
The Mk. 3a Sleepers exported to Denmark back in 1987 have returned to the United Kingdom, having been declared surplus by Danish Railways following the opening of the Great Belt crossing.
The ten vehicles (nos. 10664/7/9/76/7/81/94/5/8 and 10721) have been purchased by Angel Trains Contracts. On November 30th, they were hauled by 47286 from Dollands Moor (having returned via the Channel Tunnel the previous week) to Kineton for storage.

Thanks for the quick replies. Does anybody know the original allocation, for example where they intended for East Coast sleeper services that where subsequently withdrawn?

Don't think there would have been a specific allocation but traditional overnight multipurpose services carrying the odd sleeper were quite severely cut after the order was placed, sectorisation getting some of the blame.

The Mark IIIs were in regular use between Kobenhavn H., Aarhus and Aalborg C up until the opening of Great Belt bridge/tunnel in 1998. I travelled on them a couple of times, they were comfortable but with a bit of gap between train and platform as they were obviously GB gauge. At the time, BR had plenty of spare vehicles as sleepers were being withdrawn just a few years after it had invested in all new fleet following the Taunton sleeper fire in 1975.

Weren't the Mk3 Sleepers already on order - or at least in the pipeline - before that particular incident, though?

They were certainly being considered, as the Taunton accident report makes reference. The new sleepers had uprated fire resistance and alarm systems as a result, which increased their cost and may also have delayed introduction.

They were last used (I believe) on seasonal snow and ski trips from Copenhagen to Innsbrucke - saw some at the latter on a Saturday am arrival in , or around 1988.

BR regrettably ordered way too many of the MK3 sleepers ...
