Maritime Stations

On previous theads there have been discussions regarding the stations at Newhaven and Weymouth amongst others. I can remember a number of so called "Maritime stations" both here and on the continent are there actually many if any left. When I say Maritime I mean where the train pulls up more or less alongside the ship.

Aha more than I thought, however how many of those mentioned can you actually get a train to, get off the train through formalities and on to a ship or ferry. You can exclude Weymouth for starters Are there any services to Southampton Docks any more?

No passenger services to Southampton Docks although freight traffic still runs to and from the quayside.

No, you have to get a bus/taxi from Southampton Central to Town Quay.

Also, Gourock isn't next to the ship. I believe it's about a 20 minute walk.

Harwich Parkeston Quay (to give it the incorrect name), Fishguard Harbour and Holyhead are the most obvious three of you are catching a substantial sized ferry.

Hoek van Holland, but not for much longer in the traditional sense once the branch line to Rotterdam is converted to part of the Rotterdam metro.

I thought cruise ship charters into Southampton still go down to the docks?

Portsmouth Harbour gets you the fast cats to Ryde or the shuttle to Gosport, but not the slower Fishbourne car ferry (a short walk though), the Ryde Hovercraft and a long way from Portsmouth International.

Mindyou, on the international ferries at least foot passengers are a very small market these days.

If there's a shuttle bus does it still count? If so you can add Birkenhead Hamilton Square (for 12 Quays) to the list.

It's adjacent to the CalMac passenger-only ferries from Gourock to Dunoon; the Western Ferries primarily-vechicular ferries leave from "McInroy's Point" (also in Gourock, but rarely called as such) to Hunters Point (just north of Dunoon), which is about a 20 minute walk from the station.

Or the Harwich-Shotley/Felixstowe bath tub, a short walk from Harwich Town.

Back in the 80s Prins Ferries used to sail to Germany from Harwich Town rather than Parkeston Quay, together with an appropriate boat train.

As far as I know it's still there, though I don't know when it was last used. I think on the recent recreation of the steam hauled Golden Arrow, passengers were bussed to Calais Ville.

As a Maritime station? Not unless you bend the definition of Maritime beyond its normal use. Windermere is merely a mere, not even a lake, let alone a sea

You've got me there, my Latin isn't what it was, or ever has been. Or the German meer perhaps?

Let's throw in Tilbury Riverside (now closed), that used to see boat trains from Liverpool St for cruise ships, as well as home to the less exotic Gravesend ferry.

The days when the ships drew up alongside the platforms are long gone.

Calais-Maritime and Boulogne-Maritime were both closed on 21 January 1995, I believe. I have fond memories of going to Calais-Maritime in 1992 on my way to see a French girlfriend...

The Germans often call a mere, a sea (as in Wannsee near Potsdam, for instance). The Dutch IJsselmeer was once the Zuiderzee, of course, before the Afsluitdijk was built (Close Off Dyke), so the terms are a bit interchangeable in Germanic languages, such as our own English.

In that case add Gravesend West which was adjacent to the pier, though part of the formation is still used for the connection from HS1 the the domestic network at Fawkham Junction.
