Hello there,

A friend of mine at work travels from Margate to Elephant and Castle. He currently uses a 1 month "NOT LONDON" ticket, but is there any cheaper way than this?

Cheers in advance for any advice.

Without looking at possible splits, the two obvious options are to buy an annual ticket (which gives around a month and a half free as against monthly tickets), or, if he does not have access to the £4K upfront, to use odd period tickets. These are tickets for at least one month and any random number of days, and allow planning to avoid having the ticket valid on days when you won't use it, like holidays and weekends.

Say for the sake of argument his current ticket runs out by the 7th of March and he is going to take three days' holiday between Easter and the Royal Wedding. He could get a ticket valid from 7th March to 21st April inclusive for £572.60, then when he returns on 3rd May get a ticket to the 7th of June for £484.10. The three months' travel is £1056.70, saving £88.40 against three monthly tickets.

What about splitting the monthly at Bromley south - would that work out any cheaper?

Herne Bay is probably the best split for day tickets, but even there for Seasons works out at £3 more per month.

edit: Canterbury West - EPH monthly is 356.40 (saving £25 a month as well as more flexible travel) - seems to be valid via Ramsgate group by the Routeing Guide, but NRE doesn't like it. Can anyone confirm?

Did you fares check Canterbury West to make sure that Ramsgate Group is a valid routeing point?

I dont think it is. Though im taking it your saying get a ticket from C west then double back on yourself to go via Ramsgate and Margate that way..
