Recently I’ve been travelling from there at about 16:30 on a Thursday afternoon - every couple of weeks

There are so many platform staff - I reckon at least 10 today

Purely out of curiosity does anyone know why? I know they have some events at Dreamland on a Thursday night but - as far as I know- there isn’t one tonight

That's weird. Most stations within London that aren't London terminals are barely staffed at the best of times. Metro/Suburban and HS1/long distance are so very different.

The staff are brilliant at Margate. They catered well, above and beyond, my year 1 class a few weeks ago.

Dreamland, good weather, school holidays etc are all reasons as to why they are staffed well.

I think a lot are revenue and enforcement officers. They are there checking people departing have a ticket and I welcome it massively . Unfortunately anti social behaviour in that part of Kent is horrendous

Possibly

Have to say I’ve never seen them checking tickets

I haven’t taken much notice of anything that would identify their job. But my initial reaction was that they were platform staff

I’ll have a closer look next time I’m there

I mostly use Ramsgate where there are quite regular revenue blocks. That doesn’t seem to be what is happening at Margate

Margate platforms have a lovely big curve on them which means that they need multiple dispatchers to supervise the PTI (Platform-Train Interface) and dispatch process, as no one person can see the side of the whole train at any one time.

Thanet has had some awful incidents of (young) people trying to cross the tracks and getting killed, so I think that's a factor too. It was very noticeable that during Folk Week last year Broadstairs had up to half a dozen people in hi viz on the platforms - although it's one station that could still do with more staffing more often during the summer especially, in my opinion.

Margate still regularly lock up/clear trains I believe. If so there's a few extra people there required.

As others have said, might be a few revenue/ non-platform staff on site too. Peak time there might be a few more departures which requires an extra dispatcher on hand. Or there may have just been a staff meeting. Endless potential reasons!
