Marches line disruption, 28 July 2017

According to Twitter there are delays up to 120 minutes due to damage to lineside equipment at Abergavenny. Passengers being advised not to travel. Disruption expected until 22.00 at least. Does anyone know what this is? Also seems there is a train failure at Shrewsbury disrupting services to Wolverhampton. Not a good day to be travelling on ATW

Got to Newport with bike heading for Abergavenny only to find line blocked. I think someone said train ripped some cables. But not sure I have it right as was too busy thinking how soaked I would be after bike ride home. At least I had that option as ATW site saying replacement buses are extremely limited

Cables and troughing fell off footbridge and were run over by train 1W96. Passenger on platform injured. Area being made safe and signalling on back up. Lines not yet reopened.

1W96 appears not to have been adversely affected by it. Not good news though and hope the injured passenger is OK

An STP 1T20 2100 Cwmbran to Crewe has run past the site. formed off 1W20 1510 Milford Haven to Crewe which had terminated there.

I remember the footbridge seeming a bit "life expired" last time i used it and that was some time ago.

According to BBC Text service, train struck overhead cables (must have been flying at the time) and that three people suffered minor injury but not detained in hospital.

Re the problem the OP mentioned in Post #1 and problems at Shrewsbury also, 1709 Birmingham Intl appears to have returned from Wellington to Wolverhampton and then ran via Stafford and Crewe to reach Chester.

5 people apparently injured in this incident including three on the bridge itself. Thankfully only a few bruises. RAIB attended today.

A dangerous occurrence at Abergavenny station on 28 July 2017 is investigated by the RAIB

At around 18:05 hrs on 28 July 2017, as a northbound train entered Abergavenny station, a cable hanging from the station footbridge became caught on the roof of the train. The cable had an outside diameter of approximately 25 mm and supplied electrical power to a nearby signal box. It was connected to a local mains supply point, housed in a cabinet adjacent to platform 1, and crossed the railway by attachment to the footbridge.

The motion of the train dragged the cable and caused it to be pulled from its remaining fixings. Damage was caused to the station buildings, to the train and to other equipment on the station. The cable was pulled by the train until it broke, after which it recoiled back. The recoiling cable caused minor injuries and shock to a number of people at the station.

RAIB has released its report into passengers struck by a flying cable at Abergavenny station, 28 July 2017.

The RAIB found that the cable had not been inspected periodically as required for electrical installations and the drooping cable was not identified during footbridge inspections. It was not reported during routine station safety checks, or after it was drooping below the bottom of the footbridge. An underlying cause was that Network Rail had no controls in place for the management of low voltage electrical supply cables that cross operational railway lines via its overline structures.
