Using Navfree (a free app) on a smart phone tells you current speed, location and labels other lines as they pass. Does not need data connection either!

Sounds interesting... I've got 1:50K, 1:25K, West Mids A-Z maps and TomTom on my iPhone already (as well as Google & Apple maps). The maps are ok for tracking location and speed on railways but TomTom just isn't designed for off-tarmac use. What is that Navifree does that the others don't? Navifree is half a gig of data so it needs to do something special to take up space on my phone!

Does it name rail lines though???

I've been using it for nearly a year. I deliver near Crewe and it clearly stats that I'm near the WEST COAST MAINLINE. Not really checked other lines but I have definitely seen this one. I've heard that android map apps are better but if you have an iPhone like me, I think this is the best free app about. Much better than Google maps as its only sent me the wrong place twice. In comparison, Google was much worse. Hope this helps.

It's Open Street Map data so I suspect you can find an Online Client for it.

OSMand comes to mind (you can set it to online or offline)

It does not require internet access to use as you download the maps. However, Google Maps for Android uses a very small amount of data anyway, and that can be reduced further if you use the offline maps facility.

Yes, thanks. All my OS and other maps (apart from Google & Apple of course) work offline so that's not a problem for me. I don't think that Navfree will give me anything I haven't already got on my iPhone.

However, this thread did get me looking to see if there was an App that gives line and station info with a railway map that tracks your location. I've come up with this:

https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/great-britain-rail-by-zuti/id439294183?mt=8

I've taken a punt and spent £2.99 on this and although I haven't moved outside my front door yet, I think this is going to be pretty good. It's a lttle bit clunky but it even does live train times. location of trains, etc. The mapping is pretty good too.

I have found Nokia maps live off the Internet far better than apples offering. It will track your location and not simply try and attach you to some road somewhere. It will track speed aswell. You can create a shortcut on iPad or iphone

Hey folks - the surprising part of this app is that it lables the name of the rail lines you are travelling on or those that pass while travelling. May not be useful to all you experts but for a newbie like me (I was in unfamilliar area) it was very interesting. I was not aware of this on other mapping I had used and thought it may be interesting to others.
The thread has been moved now - perhaps I should shut up and disappear...

No need to shut up, less still to disappear. I found your post interesting and it prompted me to go in search for - and find - the mapping App that suited my needs.

Thank you :)
