Although Manningtree does have the highest concentration of pubs per head of population in Britain (according to the bbc anyway). I'm sure there is another pub on the way up to the station, as well as the one on the platform

It's not really their fault that it's no-mans-land!! Some people will blame the railways for anything!!

I wasn't blaming them for the station's location, rather the fact that the train I come in on arrives 2 minutes after the previous connection and I have to wait another 58 mins for the next one. Also, if it's in the middle of nowhere, how come it doesn't have a taxi rank?

Actually, Manningtree Station Buffet/Pub looks promising

Been through Manningtree on a few occasions and can't say there looked a lot to do! Regarding the platform bar; I'm not sure what time it's open 'til, but in the Spring this year the place was completely trashed by 'drunk and disorderly' QPR fans. I'm pretty sure they'll have rectified this by now though ;)

I have been there in the day and it's a strange but nice though.
But the pub idea sounds appealing actually.
You can be the traveller sitting in the corner of the bar where there is only shadows (like on western films)
