I have an an advance ticket for tomorrow(Friday 31st Aug) from Manchester to Baldock. The route is MAN, (dept 08.20), Doncaster,Stevenage,Baldock.
It is a through ticket (not split tickets).

Due to a change in circumstances I need to be in Stevenage rather than Baldock and have no need to go to Baldock now..

I am assumming that the ticket will not let me through the barriers at Stevenage.

Is it permissable to purchase a ticket from Hitchen to Stevenage before departure from Manchester and use this ticket to leave Stevenage station?

Arguably, you would be allowed to do that under the wording of the Advance ticket T&Cs and the National Rail Conditions of Carriage. You are certainly not "supposed" to buy such a ticket merely to exit the station however.

You may also choose to use the station facilities at Stevenage whilst waiting for your train :)

The only way to be certain of being legal is to travel to Baldock and then use another ticket to return from there.
