From the attached tickets, you can see that I`ll be travelling from New Pudsey to Ely and back. The outward ticket is an advance so no argument with the mandatory reservation. But for the return, I opted for a flexible off peak single rather than an advance which would have been cheaper. But this ticket carries the same "mandatory reservation" wording.

As I understand, I can return on any train after 9.30 (except not before I actually get there). As part of the booking process I had to select a return train so I chose the most likely one. But I might wish to change which is why I paid more.

We encounter ticket checking staff who make up rules. Here they wouldn`t need to as someone else in the industry has done it for them, making up a restriction and printing it on the ticket.

If I opt for a different train, am I going to have to travel armed with the NRCoT and a print of the restriction for this particular ticket? And would I then still risk having somebody say that what`s printed on the ticket over-rides all that? Surely, the word "mandatory" should not be there.

It's because LNER mark all their services mandatory reservation, however they don't actually enforce it. If you want to tick the box (even though you don't need to) you can make a separate reservation on LNER via their website.

I'd delete that attachment by the way - you've included the barcodes so anybody could use those tickets!

No, you can just hop on

If you want a seat reservation for another train, you can get one on GWR website for free

Thanks for the ticket info and thanks also for telling me to delete the images which I have done. Sorry, this never occurred to me. I was so careful that there was nothing on them to identify me, I didn`t think about the bar codes being lethal.
