Yesterday I bought a Return to Wolverhampton (Any Permitted Route) and caught 08:30 Manchester-Shrewsbury service as far as Crewe and the next London Midland service to Wolverhampton, now the query I've got is the ticket valid via Shrewbury or not? Just that the guard on the ATW service said it was as he asked me where I was changing and I said Crewe as I thought ticket wasn't valid via Shrewsbury but he was adamanent that it was and if it is valid might try that route sometime as never done Shrewsbury to Wolverhampton line yet

Manchester and Wolverhampton are both Routeing Points, so no fares check is needed. Permitted routes can be found on maps TM and TM+NR, neither of which include Shrewsbury.

NR gives Manchester to Wilmslow via the Airport or Stockport, or Manchester to Warrington.
TM gives Manchester/Warrington to Crewe then on to Stafford (optionally via Stoke) and Wolves, or Manchester to Stoke to Stafford to Wolves.

I assume that your ticket was a Manchester-Wolverhampton one. If so, it isn't valid that way (which makes some sense, as Wolverhampton is roughly due south of Manchester, whereas Shrewsbury isn't).

Manchester-Shrewsbury is valid via Wolverhampton, and tickets from Manchester to stations between Wolverhampton and Shrewsbury are valid either way. A Manchester-Shifnal off peak return costs the same as a Manchester-Wolverhampton one. You could use a London Midland train between Shrewsbury and Wolverhampton, but not an Arriva Trains Wales one, as they don't stop at Shifnal.
