Thinking of applying for this one. Have to live 45 minutes away or closer. Says it's Manchester but it's a pretty big city. Anyone got any ideas whereabouts.

I've applied for this, currently got the "application in process" status on the login.

Has anyone else who applied heard anything yet?

I've had an email saying my application will not be progressed any further

Does anyone know how often trainee driver positions with Northern are advertised?

Northern tend to add new vacancies to their careers board usually on Thursdays. Some weeks may see a handful of new roles appear and in another week there may be nothing added at all.

Regarding the trainee driver roles, there's no indication of when they will advertise a new trainee driver role but it could be anywhere in the north as Northern cover a huge area. I would personally check the Northern careers site every couple of days as it's not unknown for the trainee driver roles to be taken down after 24 hours from being put on there. The volume of applications for these jobs is very high indeed so the HR people will close the recruitment window very quickly in most cases.

As for your application failing at first base - don't be too down hearted. Like I said the number of people applying for these roles can go into treble figures. It really does feel like a recruitment lottery just trying to get your foot in the door! We have discussed previously on here that your application will probably not have been seen by human eyes. HR feed the applications through a computer that scans all the data and will cherry pick the applications that stand out better than others.

If you do get rejected for further trainee driver roles you should sit down and try to review your CV and cover letter to see if you can improve anything on there and add some buzz words.

All the best for future applications though.

Poor choice of words. They do not cherry pick applications that stand out. The electronic sift simply rejects applications that don't meet a formatted criteria.

I applied for this role. I haven’t had any rejection e-mail but the status of the application on the portal says “end of process”. Does this mean rejection or does it mean application process closed and my application is still being considered (I cling on to the vain hope that it is this).

The other question I have is regarding the online portal. Mine has Liverpool vacancy from April 2019 and Wigan vacancy from May 2019 listed. I withdrew the Wigan application as I live outside the commuting time but there is still option listing “apply”.

It is also the same with the Liverpool application. I never applied at that time due to only discovering vacancy just before submission deadline date. It still has the option to apply now. Obviously I wouldn’t apply now as they are not current vacancies so why does it still give the option to submit the applications? Very confusing.

From personal experience ‘End Of Process’ means you’re no longer in the running and that you’ve been rejected for the role

‘Application in Progress’ or ‘Assessment’ means you’ve made the next stage

It's always worth logging on to the Deutsche Bahn website for any future roles you apply for with Northern or other Arriva companies.

Northern are usually quite good at letting you know if your application has not been successful. However, a role I applied for with Cross Country was marked as 'end of process' for a vacancy I applied for a few months ago. XC never contacted me so it's always worth just logging on to your account to keep abreast of the application status.

The HR recruitment people are usually very busy and may not always let unsuccessful candidates know. Many organisations outside the railway industry have a recruitment policy where they say that if we do not contact you by a certain date, then you have been unsuccessful. I believe Merseyrail used this policy during a recruitment drive for station assistants earlier this year.

If it doesn’t say “end of process” then you’re still in the hat

Afternoon all, has anyone heard anything more regarding their application? My account still says application in process, but it's been much longer than the two weeks they mentioned on the update email.
Thanks :)
