Hi can I just check, I found an advance ticket on Tuesday night for £20. As it's an advance ticket it will say valid to 21st August. Will the ticket be valid on the morning train on the 22nd August?

Sometimes When I travel overnight on an advance ticket even though I travel on the selected trains when I booked online the guards challenge me. If I'm doing nothing wrong what do I do if the guard forces me to pay for a new ticket, I think it might happen

Either pay, and make a complaint & request for refund (if you do not want to argue with the guard and are happy to chase up later), or...

Express surprise at the request, show the itinerary and state you expect the itinerary to be honoured and have no money allocated for additional travel costs. It's then up to them if they drop the matter (likely), order you off the train (in which case we have a very good case against the TOC and I'm aware of staff who have been taken off frontline duties for that), or issue a UFN (unpaid fare notice - but you can't ask for one as the guard may think you're a dodger if you even know what a UFN is!)

The last time I was on a train where a customer presented a valid ticket that the guard deemed invalid, the guard was initially aggressive and said he'd get BTP to meet them at the next major station. He then changed his mind and said he'd charge an excess fare. He then changed his mind again and "let them off" after admitting he did not have a copy of the NRCoC and did not know what it actually said. I don't think any of the passengers complained (people usually don't) so the dodgy guards continue to act like that until a complaint is made.

Have you complained at your previous mistreatment? If not, you have to hope others have, as if not, the guards who gave you grief will probably continue to do so until they're told otherwise!
