Manchester to Sheffield Help!!

Hi, im looking for some help regarding valid routeing points between Manchester and Sheffield. I will be in Manchester for the weekend and heading through to Sheffield for a gig. Im hoping to buy an off peak day return, my problem is I dont have a finishing time so am unable to plan my return journey, the last train i can see thats direct leaves sheffield at 22:47 so im a bit unsure if I will make it. if possible on my return could I go to Leeds and get an overnight TPE back to Manchester or would I have to buy separate tickets for the return leg??

Manchester is a Routeing Point (RP).
Sheffield is a RP.

So no need to look up valid routeing points.

Manchester Group to Sheffield Group is valid on map MS and also map PS, as you can see these maps only permit travel via the Hope Valley.

However why not simply buy a ticket from Manchester to somewhere like Wakefield (or Doncaster)? The price difference is negligible, in fact Wakefield is 10p cheaper.

Right, so you're looking at the 0220 Leeds-Manchester? (The exact time may vary depending on day of travel if there is engineering work)

You'd need to get the 2315 from Sheffield. This is a NT stopper via Bolton-on-Dearn. A ticket to somewhere like Bolton-on-Dearn would be valid (you would simply stay on and immediately start your return journey)

Actually this doesn't help you that much, you get to Manchester 0336. But if you wait for the overnight Sheffield-Manchester train, you arrive at 0440 (depart Sheffield 0345) so it only beats it by 1 hour 4 minutes, with a long wait (nearly 2 hours) in Leeds. Not sure it's worth it, but if that's what you want to do a ticket to somewhere like BTD or GOE is valid both via Leeds or via Sheffield for a 'circular' trip.

Im pretty sure that there was an EMT to Leeds the last time I checked which got me into Leeds in time for a trains at around 1ish but I may be mistaken. I will have another look see what I get.

There is a gap between 2345 and 0220. I looked at 13/20/27 January as example dates.

Only on Sunday nights, 23.28 EMT from Sheffield via Wakefield Westgate.

It is of no great benefit though as there are no services from Leeds to Manchester around 1am. As Yorkie said you would be waiting at Leeds for the 02.20, the train before that is at 23.45.
