Hi Guys

I`ll be travelling from Manchester to London on saturday, (tomorrow), buying a return ticket and coming back in the New Year, I will however be breaking my journey on the way down in London and staying in London on Saturday night, will I be able to continue with my same ticket to Sandy fromn London, the next day, or will I have to buy an additional single from Kings Cross to Sandy?

Many thanks in advance.

Off Peak returns are valid to continue your journey on Day 2 if you don’t complete it on the first night.

However, barely any staff are aware of this and you will probably face issues.

Yes, this is valid on an Off-Peak Single or Off-Peak Return (or indeed an Anytime Single/Return). You may wish to book your ticket with an itinerary such that it goes over two days (for example by using a site where you can enforce a longer-than-necessary wait, e.g. TrainSplit, adding 99 minute extra waits at each of London Euston and King's Cross). If you printed that off, there would be a reduced scope for unknowledgeable staff to cause you issues with the ticket.

That's great thank you.

I`ve just found this bit in conditions,

"Off-Peak Singles and the outward portion of Off-Peak Returns are valid for travel on the date shown on the ticket and until 04:29 the following morning. If the journey cannot be completed in this time, the ticket may be used to continue the journey on the following day"

The bit in bold is confusing, I would be able to complete the journey in the same day, but chose not too, as I`m staying in London overnight. My question is, who determines if the journey can`t be completed?

It's ambiguous, and thus in general must be interpreted in favour of the consumer. In any case, if you have an itinerary that shows validity on the second day, it's indisputable*.

*Well, except by people who have no understanding of even the rudimentary basics of contract law!

Just one more question sorry, I normally go via London from Manchester to Sandy on an any permitted ticket, does this still allow me to return via Didcot?

Update I asked about use of the tickets for the day after, and three different ticket offices said I could use it on the outward bound after the day of issue, but in the end I put it in the barrier at King's Cross this evening and it let me though, and it did again at Sandy.

Yes, London to Manchester is valid via Didcot.

(For anyone who wants to know the detail; it's valid from London Group to Manchester Group on map combination RG+RM+NR using the split route check).
