Manchester to Rainhill

My OH is doing the following journeys on Saturday

1. Sankey to Manchester Piccadilly (morning)

2. Manchester (Victoria or Piccadilly) to Rainhill.

She has a season ticket, Warrington to Liverpool.

I have a feeling on leg 2 that if she has a Warrington to Manchester day return,
this will only cover the entirety of leg 2 in conjunction with the season IF she travels from Earlestown to Rainhill on a direct Warrington Bank Quay to Liverpool Lime St service - that is, NOT if she travels on a Manchester Victoria to Liverpool service BEYOND EARLESTOWN.

That is

Manchester Vic- Rainhill direct -not permitted
Manchester Vic/Picc - Earlestown (get off)
Earlestown - Rainhill (on a Warrington - Liverpool direct service only) - permitted

Because Rainhill isn't a valid Warrington-Liverpool route - unless on a direct train. I think!

Unless - how is the "shortest route" rule applied? The shortest route from Warrington BANK QUAY to Liverpool is undoubtedly via Earlestown - but from "Warrington" to Liverpool it's via Hunts Cross - by 1/4 mile!

Is a conductor likely to accept the common sense view that a Warrington-Manchester return plus a Warrington-Liverpool season allows you to get from Manchester to Rainhill?

Your first bit of logic is sound, the combination would not be valid on a direct Victoria-Rainhill service.

If the season says (as I suspect it does) Warrington Stations, it will be the shortest route from a Warrington station. Many believe at this point you may introduce the +3 miles rule (Section F: The Routeing Guide in Detail), which might make via Earlestown the shortest route also.

However, this could be irrelevant as, depending on the time of travel, the Manchester Piccadilly-LLandudno ATW service has a 20 minute connection at Earlestown for the Warrington-Liverpool stopper.

OH doesn't know the exact time of travel on the Manchester-Rainhill leg unfortunately.

The "3 mile" wording in the RG is as clear as mud!

Looks like it's an extra 1.90 for the last section to Rainhill, or a wait at Earlestown!

You might want to take another look at that map.....

Perversely, Earlestown-Warrington-Liverpool IS allowed though I can't imagine why anyone would want to go that way.
