Hi,

Is there any splits for Manchester to Peterborough that work out cheaper than just buying a straight ticket? I'm looking to buy on-the-day because you never know, I might come down with covid and have to call the whole thing off so don't want to buy advanced fares. I'm travelling Thursday 22nd July 2021 and returning Monday 26th July 2021.

Thanks. :)

EDIT: I have a 16-25 railcard!

For split fares see the Trainsplit website. But also look for the industry’s Book with Confidence scheme regarding the use of Advance tickets.

A good way is to find Advance tickets via Hebden Bridge (use that as a via point in the journey planner) using Northern (rather than TPE) for the Manchester-Leeds leg, then changing at Leeds for Peterborough.

Going on EMR via Nottingham - splitting at Nottingham on Advances sometimes works out cheaper.

Because the OP's journey is out and return on different days, guess that the use of CDRs for all or part of the trip won't really work. So, are there actually any walk-up split ticket opportunities without having to resort to advance tickets? (OP has hinted that their journey might not actually happen). Presume also that @startingaparty is travelling at times when off peak tickets would be valid.

On Railsmartr there are Advance fares for a total of £35.25, travelling out on the 10.37 and back on the 09.54 on the days you want (I don't know what times you want to go). Railsmartr is participating in "Book with Confidence" so you can cancel these Advance tickets up to 18.00 the day before and put the money towards any other tickets (not just Advance, not just for that journey) within the next 12 months.

Not heard of that retailer before, is it new?

Looking at the site, it's Assertis' "own label" consumer site. They provide web sales for Caledonian Sleeper and Heathrow Express, and have a 50% stake in On Track Retail (used by GTR and Southeastern).

I've just had a quick look on that website and I feel a piece of information on it is factually inaccurate/misleading:

It claims if you've paid for a First Class ticket from a to b and part of your journey involves a train which doesn't offer First Class, that the price you've paid will always reflect this.

e.g. looking to travel between Manchester Piccadilly and Bristol Temple Meads on Monday 12th July- it offers an itinerary via Newport and Bristol Parkway- with First Class only available for the last 10 minutes from Bristol Parkway to Bristol Temple Meads. First Class single cost? £223.40 (compared with £56 Standard anytime).

The website doesn't warn you that over 90% of the journey won't offer First Class accommodation.

We launched it last year, just as yet another lockdown began...

Thanks. We'll look to make that clearer. Of course, the real issue is that 1st Class fares are available for journeys that involve trivial / meaningless amounts of 1st class compared to the overall journey, and yet we (and all other retailers) are obliged to show then if any leg includes 1st Class. It's only when no legs include 1st Class that we are obliged not to show them. We will look at a UX improvement to make it clearer that much of the journey does not include 1st Class, as this is not often obvious to customers.

Update on this: I've found that buying an anytime off-peak return from Manchester to Doncaster and then an anytime off-peak return from Doncaster to Peterborough is cheaper by nearly £10.

Apologies, as I might have mentioned this upthread.

Means you have to travel via Doncaster obviously.

Depending on connections at Doncaster, and assuming you are using off peak return (SVR) tickets, it can sometimes be worthwhile doing a one way excess from a "via Sheffield" ticket to one routed "via Leeds" on the return journey.
