Next April I’m planning to attend a conference in Huddersfield from Manchester, probably quicker on a bus so admittedly I’m going by train for the sake of it, might as well make the most of it.

What classes and TOC’s can I expect on-route? I would quite like the loco and mark 5A’s if they go that way only ever ridden on DMU’s.

Next April is some way away, but currently Manchester to Huddersfield direct services are usually only operated by TPE (TransPennine Express), using predominantly Class 185 (DMU) or Class 802 (bi-mode) rolling stock.

Hopefully hourly Scarborough services are back by then!

Currently there's 2 x Piccadilly to Scarborough services per day (and return workings) that are operated by loco hauled stock.

Newcastle services are bi-mode stock, the other North TransPennine service services are still 185s.

It's too far away to say with absolute certainty what will happen.

But what's likely is class 185s on the stopping Manchester-Huddersfield services, Manchester Airport-Saltburn services, and Liverpool-Hull services. Class 802s on Liverpool/Manchester Victoria-York/Newcastle services. And a mixture of class 185s and class 68/Mk5a stock on Manchester Piccadilly-Scarborough services.

Are you sure Liverpool services will go to Hull instead of Scarborough?

In the draft timetable it shows the following departures from Leeds:
xx:00 Liverpool, calls at Stalybridge
xx:07 Piccadilly, calls at Stalybridge off-peak and all stations between Huddersfield and Stalybridge at peak times.
xx:15 Victoria, calls at Dewsbury
xx:30 Liverpool express
xx:45 Manchester Airport, calls at Dewsbury

It doesn't say which is the Hull or Scarborough service but it should be the xx:00 and xx:07 services. If the xx:07 makes the additional calls at peak times then it doesn't sound like the best service for loco-hauled stock.

The MRTF timetable involves essentially no change to TPE services east of Manchester. The Hull/Scarborough swap was initiated after these draft timetables were written.
