I'm traveling to Charlbury on a Saturday and want to:

Avoid XC
Ride a Chiltern 68
The journey to be cheap and as fast as possible.

I thought of this,
Manchester to Crewe
Crewe to Wolverhampton
Wolves to Smethwick Galton Bridge
Smethwick Galton Bridge to Birmingham Moor
Birm Moor to Banbury (CR 68)
Banbury to Oxford
Oxford to Charlbury

Is that permitted on an any permitted return?

The Virgin Trains East Coast journey planner will offer itineraries for this if you put Smethwick GB as the "via" point, then click on Timetables Only, then put Moor Street as the "Calls at" station, then update and then click on buy ticket.

Actually, you get better results if you use The Hawthorns, and not Smethwick GB, as your via point. And if you do that, nothing further is gained by going into and out of the Timetables page.

Walking between New Street and Moor Street is probably quicker, if the OP wants a fast journey.
