Manchester Stns to Glossop, return from Hadfield

I understand that, strictly speaking, I cannot break my journey on the outward portion off an off-peak day return ticket. I want to travel this weekend from Manchester to Glossop, and then come back from Hadfield (if possible using a Manchester - Hadfield Off Peak Day Return). Is finishing short the same as break of journey? Or do I need to buy two singles?

That's not correct.

It is only sometimes restricted - and it is fairly rare for off-peak returns, and I think very rare for off-peak day returns, to have a break of journey restriction.

Break of journey is always permitted on both portions of an Off-Peak Day Return AFAIK.

I suspect because the old Saver ticket (valid one month) DID have that restriction in most/all cases, whereas the old off-peak (day) return DIDN'T? Now they both get labelled as Off-peak, so confusion is understandable

That's correct. BoJ restrictions don't apply to any Day ticket.

Its a regular occurrence on that line what you are suggesting due to walkers etc. no guard will have any problem with it.
