:?: Noted that there are various ticketing / routing options from Manchester to Clitheroe, namely via Preston (most expensive), route Any Permitted and thirdly via Darwen (cheapest).

For the avoidance of doubt, does a Manchester to Clitheroe route "Any Permitted" ticket allow travel via Todmorden and/or Hebden Bridge as well as, presumably, via Darwen?

So far as I can see, the only permitted mapped route is via Darwen & Bolton.

The Routeing Guide says that only Blackburn is valid as a routeing point for Clitheroe on a Manchester-Clitheroe "any permitted" journey.

The only map valid for Manchester-Blackburn is MH, which only offers the route via Bolton & Darwen.

This just appears to be another case where the "any permitted" tickets add nothing to the "via Darwen" tickets except for validity (by virtue of the direct-train rule) on the weekday 2142 through train from Clitheroe to Manchester Victoria via Todmorden.

I guess the Any Permitted is intended to be permitted via Todmorden, but someone has forgotten to actually make it valid (or maybe it was valid and then someone accidentally removed it)

Hopefully the helpful person/people at ATOC who have fixed matter such as this, will see this thread and it will be fixed soon

You could also try contacting Northern Rail, and/ or one of the 3rd party retailers as they'll have contacts with ATOC.

The "any permitted" anytime return was a regulated fare, so it probably suited the operator to sell almost no tickets on it. It's been abolished now, but there's probably still a regulated fare of some sort on the route.

As far as routes via the Todmorden Curve go, you're basically just looking at routes with "via Todmorden" tickets and any other routes with direct trains. There may be an easement somewhere, but I haven't seen anything relevant myself. Some things did change when the Todmorden Curve opened, but there hasn't been a pile of new routes created to take advantage of it.

 As it happens, whilst Bolton station is currently being upgraded, Northern are temporarily operating direct services on Saturdays and Sundays from Manchester Victoria -> Clitheroe, via Todmorden and Blackburn.

And whilst Bolton block is happening restrictions have been relaxed to allow "via Darwen" usage via Todmorden.

Have now heard back from Northern who advise that "It seems as though the 'any permitted' tickets are also valid on the Todmorden Curve line, i.e. travelling from Manchester Victoria to Clitheroe, via Burnley with a change at Blackburn."

via Todmorden not a mapped route between Manchester Group and Blackburn.

I think they mean they intend it to be valid.

I doubt Northern are even aware of the tinkering RDG are doing with the Routeing Guide, and how restrictive it is becoming. Changes are made on a whim seemingly without permission or knowledge of the relevant TOCs.

There used to be a specific easement allowing doubling-back through Hebden Bridge, so it's definitely screw up rather than anything else.
