Hi all, just a quick query...

I've got an Off Peak Return (SVR) from London Terminals (LON) to Manchester Stations (MCR) - and I'm staying / working near Man Victoria.

Outward journey's already done, I got a cab from Man Picc to destination as it was quite late. However on the return, am I allowed to go from Man Victoria to Man Picc on the train and change for my train to Euston, or am I restricted to using only one of the Manchester stations - i.e. having to make my way separately to Picc to get the Euston train?

You can do exactly what you propose from Manchester Victoria. There is also a network of free bus services that go around Manchester City centre which you may wish to check out.

Just check your train is on time first. You would not want to miss your London train due to a simply cross city connection being delayed.

I’d take the free bus

I'd just walk. I know I can do it in 20 minutes max, extremely reliably, and I don't have to rely on a train or bus that may or may not turn up.

Bear in mind that yiu have to take a train from Victoria to Piccadilly, there's only one an hour. You can't take the tram without paying separately.

Although there's also the alternative of taking the train via Salford Crescent, which adds an extra change but gives several extra journey opportunities. Probably not worth it when there's a free bus though.

Indeed, although it's only an additional £1.40 for the tram (one way). Through tickets can also be bought from London Terminals to/from GM Metrolink Z1, price for an Off Peak Return with the Zone 1 tram add-on is £116.70 (compared with £114.00 for London to Manchester Stns). Can't imagine many ever get sold, but they could be more convenient / straightforward for some.

Until Monday (11th) you can’t take the tram at all. The line through Piccadilly Gardens is closed for track replacement so you’d have to get off at Market Street and walk.

For a journey to London that is making things unnecessarily complicated - it adds in the longish walk and steps at both Deansgate and Piccadilly. Just get the free direct bus!

I normally walk between Piccadilly and Victoria. Takes c.15 minutes at a brisk pace.

Trams are off. Nothing passing Picc Gardens to the station for months now.

TPE's 1-an-hour, no 2 free bus, or £4.70 in an Uber are best.

It's around a mile on foot. Despite it being mostly downhill in that direction, it will take most folk a bit longer than that. Particularly so if it's a transfer all the way from platform 13/14 at Manchester Piccadilly to platform 4/5/6 at Manchester Victoria.

The OP will be going back to London, so won't need those platforms.

0.9 miles/22 minutes according to Google. I can normally beat that comfortably although I do know the short cuts.

A few years ago, I was on my way back from a forum walk and was travelling from Blackburn to Euston, with changes at Bolton and Piccadilly. The train from Bolton was cancelled so I stayed on the train to Victoria which gave me 15 minutes to get to Piccadilly for the last Virgin train service of the day to Euston. I made the train, and even had sufficient time to divert via Sainsbury's at Piccadilly Station for 'supplies'

Balloon St, up past Shudehill Tram stop, Thomas St, Stevenson Square and the back of Piccadilly Gardens, 20 minutes tops at average walking pace.

Don't faff around with free buses, or trams (there aren’t any currently) or the trains from Vic to Picc, just walk.

Last time I tried not a single bus on the 2 circuit, whatever there was were all running on the 1 route, no regulation to provide an even service.

When it comes to the free buses I just check bus times.org if I think I might want them, and if they aren't working I just walk, get the tram or use regular buses.
