First post here, so be friendly:D

Recently moved to Sheffield for University and use the 23:53 service from Piccadilly back after evening matches at United. My question is this, the first time we used it, it went via Huddersfield and arrived about 1:15...however a week later, it arrived around 00:40 and went via the Hope Valley (I think)...basically, I'm asking why the route change, and which is the most common one?

Cheers

It is a TPE service and booked via Huddersfield and Wakefield and due in 01 21It might go via the Hope Valley and get in earlier if Engineering Work on the booked route. It is not unusual for trains to go "strange" routes at night to enable Traincrew to maintain diversionary route knowledge.

Out of interest, does this service reverse at Wakefield Kirkgate and go via Barnsley ?

To save you the trouble, I have looked it up on Real Time Trains. It does not revers but carries on in the same direction of travel via Hare Park Jn and Swinton Jn.

Unless this trip is now diagrammed for 170s, 185s are barred iirc between Wincobank and Horbury Jns, so cannot go via Barnsley.

There's a set of single bore tunnels between Kirkgate and Darton with restricted clearances. I assume that's why anyway !

If that's the case, would there be anything preventing diversions operating via Penistone, whether by reversal at Huddersfield, or travelling via Todmorden and Deighton

Surely they would only be banned between Barnsley and Horbury Jct if the single bore tunnels between the two were the reason?

Neither 170s nor 185s are cleared for the Penistone line. Whether it is simply down to paperwork not being completed or something else I do not know.

Could well be the paperwork. Unlike the old days, traction now is cleared over routes it is intended to work over. It doesn't mean it is unsuitable to work over other routes but just never checked out. One checked out, as happened in the case of 175s required to work over the HOWL due to an emergency, they have been added to the route. Although they are not authorised to work between Bristol Parkway and Bristol T.M. it should be 99% obvious they could work between these points but they were never intended to have work so the route not shown..
