Just found the following on Northern Rail website:

Cancellations to services between Manchester Piccadilly and Ardwick

Due to a broken rail between Manchester Piccadilly and Ardwick some lines are blocked.
How does it affect your service:
Train services running to and from these stations will be cancelled. Disruption is expected until 06:45 13/06.
Our advice to our customers:
Due to a broken rail just outside Manchester Piccadilly platforms 1 and 2 are currently unable to be used. This will result in a reduced service over the following routes -
Manchester Piccadilly - Hadfield reduced to 1 service an hour (2 per hour for some peak services)
Manchester Piccadilly - Rose Hill reduced to 1 service per hour calling additionally at Hyde North.
Stalybridge - Manchester Piccadilly services will call additionally at Fairfield and Gorton.
Mutual ticket acceptance has been agreed with TransPennine Express between Stalybridge and Manchester stations.
Please consult with station staff/information screens for further information and timings.
Network Rail state they require the line to be closed for 2 nights to be able to complete the repairs.

TPE services are terminating or starting at Stalybridge rather than Picadilly. Doesn't seem to be affecting Leeds/York/Hull services too much other than having to change at Stalybridge if you want to get to Manchester.

Platform 2 was being used during the evening peak so potentially only on the point work affecting Platform 1.

TPE services operating as usual with the exception of the Hull - Manchester Piccadilly services being turned at Stalybridge and a SSO (during the peak) on the xx35 service for Stalybridge in order to connect with the Hull.

NR apparently need this evening to get the relevant part in place for installation tomorrow night.

Doesn't surprise me, considering the age of much of the track in Piccadilly station!

Whilst it ain't broke don't fix it probably applies to the situation, having parts on standby might not be a bad idea.
