Which direction would you break the journey (outward or return) and what type of ticket would you have?

You don't say what ticket you'll be using, but all the (Super) Off Peak tickets for that flow allow BoJ. I've not checked routeing validity but it looks reasonable and NRE allows the route on one ticket so it should be fine.

Yes it would, I assume the two got transposed though, it would make sense to travel Peterborough - Ely -Cambridge, not Peterborough-Cambridge-Ely.
