You don't really want people packing out your capacity constrained train between Manchester and Crewe, when it means some of your most valuable, "core", customers wanting to travel to Hereford, South Wales etc can't get a seat - especially when they're getting buttons from WMT in the ORCATS split.

And yet TfW are still encouraging people to use their trains on that stretch by offering discounted dedicated walk-up tickets!

Seems to me like half the problems are caused by poor management of the walk-up fares and their associated restrictions.

And for some reason, there's a bizarre belief that the reservation system and compulsory reservations and Advances will solve all of life's problems.

That will be brilliant if there is a lower cost Northern + LNWR fare being introduced.

It should be valid to finish up at Heaton Chapel for example.

These fares generally have break of journey restrictions, though in practice this isn't really enforceable at an ungated station.

If in doubt I can still travel to Manchester Picaadilly (paying a small bus/train fare) but conclude my journey at Heaton Chapel.

As tickets are sometimes checked between HTC and Stockport, it saves the conductor being suspicious if he hadn't seen me - which could cause a problem if break of journey was not allowed on such a ticket.

There are indeed BoJ restrictions, but on super off peak returns only. Wonder why they have this restriction in the first place though.

Walk-up tickets such as Super Off-Peak Returns permit break of journey unless otherwise specified in the restriction code.

Restriction codes JA, JB, JM and JN don't contain any restrictions on break of journey. They purely contain restrictions on departing from/arriving at London and Manchester.

Ticket types OPR and OPS (confusingly used for Super Off-Peaks) show in BR Fares as barring break of journey on the outward portion, but this is incorrect as break of journey isn't allowed or barred at a ticket level for walk-up tickets. It is instead defined using the restriction code.

Really got caught out by this one, since the fare details page also show the BoJ restriction (see below)! Thanks for your explanation, guess I'm no longer confined to lunch options inside Bham New St en route to Liverpool, ticket would work the barriers but I used to worry so much about not being let back in
