Please can anyone advise if there are any train tickets that can be purchased for travel to Trafford Bar station-I have seen that some train tickets are valid to Metrolink stations but these seem to be the City Zone only-the journey would be from Preston using direct services.

Just to expand on that, said ticket would be valid from 09:30 on weekdays and unrestricted at weekends. A saver return would cost £16.40 and would be valid on trains arriving into Manchester from 09:30 and an open return would cost £18.50. A day single would cost £11.40 in second class, £15.40 in first class.

When travelling from Preston to Metrolink stations in the peak, it is often cheaper to re-book at somewhere enroute, such as Horwich, so if you get a train which stops there then it may be cheaper to get a Preston to Horwich day return, then a Horwich to Metrolink day return. The fares to Metrolink stations are slightly different if purchased from within the GMPTE area as they are zonal rather than point to point.

I am on my mobile at the minute so haven't got the full information to hand, but will look later and post the info.

There are no First Class Return fares on this route, only single tickets which are "Any Permitted". I cannot find the "TPE only" First Class return fares to which people refer in previous posts.

If travelling at Peak times however I would strongly suggest that First Class on this route is not worth it. The trains are normally grossly overcrowded at peak times to and from Manchester on this route and actually enforcing First Class is virtually impossible so I would suggest that it is not worth it.

If, however, for some strange reason you insist on First Class then buy the standard tickets and pay the upgrade if required.

Thanks for that-I know what you are saying about the Manchester and how they are always packed out however I have found boarding at Preston and travelling First Class on the 08:47 allows me to sit in relative peace and quiet,do some work and get time for a coffee so is worth it to get the workig day off to a goood start.

On the return from Manchester Piccadilly I find it more busy and First Class usually gets declassified every time up tp about 18:30 but if boarding at Manchester Piccadilly you usually get a seat as a lot if people board at Manchester Oxford Road and other stations-you can always usually get refershments before the rush starts at the other stations when the catering just gets stopped due to the busy train.

It would be interesting to see if the Anytime Return Tickets could be upgraded and I will try this some time but suspect that I will be standing up and getting crushed that day with no option to upgrade due to the non-availability of First Class Anytime Return tickets.

The stations doesn't seem to on the list on trainline.com-will try Preston Station.
